Re: Road Toad Modifications
I got a set of the Strictly Hodaka improved rear hub cushions (the last set according to Paul), and didn’t have another failure subsequently. At the same time I was more careful when shifting into third, so that may have helped as well. Since I am no longer racing the bike, I am considering making i...

Re: Road Toad Modifications
Good point, I had forgotten about the change in finish for the 02 Toad. Relieving the exhaust bridge is critical. I found this out the hard way when I forgot to do this on one of the Toad engines I built for hare scrambles. It seized in short order. The Toad makes a great woods bike, but has a weakn...

Re: Road Toad Modifications
Looking at the parts diagrams for the 99 and 02 Toads shows the 02 Toad with leaner pilot and main jets. The cylinder head on the 02 Toad has a revised number with an “A” suffix added. Maybe (just a guess on my part), part of the fix for the 99 seizures was to richen it up, but when the real culprit...

Road Toad Modifications
According to the Hodaka book, the Road Toad had problems with piston seizures when it was first introduced. The solution consisted of three parts: 1- Relieve the exhaust port bridge. 2- Change the carb jetting. 3- Modify the cylinder head. I am aware of the details of the exhaust port modification, ...

Re: You don't see these often
Hi Joe,
Nice to see another one these bikes in Ontario, especially one that runs!
Mine is still in boxes in the basement. I have one good frame and 2 bent ones. I looked to see if I have an extra set of triple clamps, but no luck.
Regards,
Brian

I remember riding a Moto Skeeter back in the 70’s. It was a mini bike made by Moto Ski.

Re: Help identify this head
Dale is correct in that the head is from a late model 100cc bike, but the Rat and Toad heads are different. The Rat has a higher exhaust port and requires a higher compression head. My guess is that this head is from a Toad.

The project is languishing in my basement. I have about 80% of the parts and some spare stuff, but other projects have more priority.

Re: Tight piston wrist pins
I run into this quite often and my solution has always been to heat the piston with a heat gun (or hair dryer)and then the pin will usually slide right in. I have read here that it must be a push fit (no heat), but I figured since aluminum expands more than steel, a tight fit would be beneficial. I ...

Re: DS wheel swap
I had my modified DS on a tight twisty hare scrambles course and rode it against my brother on a '78 Suzuki PE250. The DS was faster. We switched riders, this time with me on the PE250. The DS was still faster. It's hard to beat a light, low maneuverable bike on tight single track, especially if it'...

Re: DS wheel swap
I did pretty much the same thing as you have planned, a DS with Wombat wheels, Wombat swing arm, Super Rat top end, and a reed valve set up. It made a great little woods bike. I would think that dropping the front end a little should help, but it will be a much better bike with the longer Wombat swi...

Re: piston pin removal and cylinder studs
Carefully remove the circlips using needle nose pliers or a pick. If you are not splitting the cases, stuff the crankcase opening with rags so the circlips don't fall in. Gently tap out the pin without putting any side pressure on the rod. Heat the piston slightly if the pin is stubborn. Not sure wh...

Re: Need Help For Alan!!!
The earlier Super Combats had a problem with transmission failures. This was fixed with a cushioned primary gear P/N 974502Z. The trouble was that the transmission failure could ruin the engine cases. This may have been the case with the bike in question. Paul used to sell a transmission upgrade kit...

To maintain originality you will need PVC sleeving. Electronic companies like Digikey sell it. Most people use heat shrink as it is easier to find. Neither one is particularly heat resistant.

Re: AHRMA legal ?
The model 96 DS has a swing arm that measures 17.5" from the mounting hole center to the end of the swing arm. The model 94 Wombat and model 95 CW measure 18.5". I once put a longer swing arm on my DS, put 18" and 21" wheels on it, and installed a modified Ace motor with a Super ...

The Dirt Squirt and Wombat frames are almost identical. The differences are the Dirt Squirt does not have a horn bracket and it has a shorter swing arm.

Re: Off-Road Toad
The Ace and Dirt Squirt cylinders are different in one small way, the Squirt cylinder has two holes drilled in the fins to attach springs that hold the pipe in place. The holes are in the third fin up from the bottom, on either side of the exhaust port. The Squirt pipe uses a flange that screws onto...

Re: Off-Road Toad
Your Toad has an Ace 100 or a Dirt Squirt motor. That's likely why the exhaust was swapped out (the original exhaust won't mate up to the Ace cylinder). Without the original motor it's not a candidate for a restoration, but it well make a good little trail bike. You could probably strip all the ligh...
