Re: new owner, need advice

hodakagirl, My first bike was a Ace 100 .Many found memories of it and all the riding I did . I'm in Walla Walla and need to go see my eye doctor tomorrow in Kennewick 10am 11/9/17. Then I'll do Costco and some running around to other places . I have a huge set of channel-lock pliers and a Hodaka F...

Re: new owner, need advice

I don't think I have big enough channel locks. Will try the PB blaster/wood-tapping idea first. On a completely unrelated subject, tomorrow is a really big day for my son. And no, I don't mean Halloween. He's at Camp Pendleton in California and at 2 a.m. October 31, he and his Company will begin the...

Re: new owner, need advice

No, I hardly had any time this weekend. It was way too nice out! Had to go for a loooong scooter ride and paddle boarding on the Columbia River. I got those brass petcocks all cleaned up and shiny, tho 8-) they were filled with hardened varnish. They still need a little work but at least they're fun...

Re: new owner, need advice

Thanks, Matt, Ossa, and squid. This is what I needed to know! The workshop manual is helpful, but the diagrams and explanations aren't quite as detailed as this newbie would like. I'll attempt the screwdriver-assisted axle removal procedure. Crossing my fingers I don't snap anything off. Don't worry...

Re: new owner, need advice

Mayhaps I am having a "senior moment", but I've never seen a Hodaka 30mm fork steel slider with a boss like that for the drain screw. What is a boss? I've seen that word elsewhere on this forum but I don't know what it means ... Those are the "real old" Ace 100 (prior to the &qu...

Re: new owner, need advice

nope, look's correct to me. it has a pinch bolt on the other side that secures the axle in place. The axle fits all the way through and threads into this end. Roger So it's threaded into there and there's no nut to hold it on?? That doesn't seem right ... the rear axle has a nut on the other side. ...

Thank you, squid. I'll need to check that out.

Here's a pic of the broken? off nut/threads on the left side of the front axle, Jack. Thoughts?

Re: new owner, need advice

The tank is getting 'fixed' so I'll worry about de-rusting later. In the meantime, I'm degreasing. I sprayed everything down with wd40 and let it sit for a day, then went to work. The dirt/grease combo is like cement, but it is coming off. Also, the nuts/bolts/screws are hard to budge. I can't seem ...

Re: Organizing

Wow, that's a greasy, dirty mess! I haven't yet opened that up, but plan to this weekend. Then we can see who's bike is dirtier, lol. I did remove the chain - luckily the master link was the 3rd one I checked. I had to scrape a layer of grime off of each link to find it. How are you planning to remo...

Good point, Ed. I'm certainly not an expert at plug chops or tuning. Just wanted to pass on some info that might help others. Thanks for the words of caution.

Re: Organizing

Um, that last part number is for an eight mm bolt, not a six mm bolt. ;) Ed Good catch, Ed! I was a little confused... thank you for that info, Roger :) Givergas, are you doing a total restore? Are you cleaning/re-plating or are you replacing nuts and bolts? Just curious. Wondering how brittle/stro...

On the modern vespa forum, in the not-so-modern section. I kind of divide my time between here and there lately.

Re: Organizing

Yours looks about like mine does right now! I'm taking lots of pictures close up and farther away for each section I'm working on dismantling, and then putting the parts in labeled plastic Ziploc bags. I ordered one of those ultrasonic cleaners so when that arrives, I'll clean the parts and re-bag t...

I like that it has pictures. I'm still getting the hang of plug reading. I found this on another forum I'm on, and it seems pretty helpful as well. Not sure of the original source:

Re: new owner, need advice

I bought this stuff called never dull wadding polish, we'll see how it works. There's a lot of metal polishes out there, and I'm sure a lot of opinions about what works best. :P I stopped by the machine shop and I got a guy to replace the tab that's chewed off. He'll see what he can do with the othe...

Hmmm, I think maybe I should wait to de-rust the tank until just before I put it back on, then. I have LOTS to do before then anyways!!

Re: new owner, need advice

Here's the rusted out tank the bike came with. It has good tabs, even has the rubber grommets. The chrome isn't as good as the tank with the chewed up tabs. It has rusted out holes in the underside :(

Re: new owner, need advice

That's a really good idea to weld washers onto the tabs after straightening them. I'll have to have a bracket welded on for the missing one, tho. Would you weld the washers on the inside or outside of the brackets? It probably doesn't matter, I guess. Thanks for the tip on the rust removal, too, hyd...

Re: new owner, need advice

Hi Bruce - what am I gluing?? The foam? I thought the seat cover is held on by clips in the underside. Maybe I'm mistaken.

The seat pan actually looks fantastic compared to several I've seen for sale on ebay. There might be rust under the foam, I can't tell, but there's no rust underneath the seat.

Re: new owner, need advice

Ya, hope so. The shop had just closed when I got there but they told me they will give me a quote this week. The spray is a good idea. But then, theres always the silver powder coating idea I saw on here somewhere ... ;)
