Re: PN 993713

The grooves create turbulence, and a side effect of cutting grooves is that combustion chamber volume is slightly increased, which slightly reduces compression. The change in compression is not really the intention. Turbulence is. If you read through the linked Klemm articles, turbulence in the squi...

And in case you missed the included link in the text above, or skipped it, here is a bit more technical discussion on what detonation is and how to avoid it: http://www.klemmvintage.com/camerondeto.htm After re-reading this white paper, especially the bullet points at the bottom of the article, and ...

Re: PN 993713

The list of damages inside the engine speak more to detonation and piston meltdown than to oil failure. See prior comments. The chances of hearing pinging in a two stroke at full throttle are about nil. A catastrophic detonation event, start to finish, may be only five or six seconds. Not much warni...

Re: PN 993713

Ed and Clarence touch on good points here. I would start with the assumption that no Hodaka was ever manufactured with the intention of running throttle pegged for any length of time, much less 12 minutes, but if that's what is needed, one must necessarily build for that purpose. For example, not kn...

Re: PN 993713

I would think that, no, you can't test function with a probe. Danny's suggestion of using a tube and mouth is the way to go, because you can verify both passage (which won't feel exactly like free flow but will pass pressure when working-the hole is pretty small) and vacuum, and do it easily. Poking...

Re: PN 993713

Every two stroke engine failure I have seen that was attributable to running straight gas, it was the bottom end bearing that failed first. But I suppose lack of oil could be your problem here. Most of the damage described could also be attributed to advanced timing and/or lean running on ethanol ga...

Re: PN 993713

For the check valve to have been the cause of a seizure, the valve would have to be clogged or stuck shut. If it isn’t clogged and if it isn’t jammed shut, it wasn’t the cause. I have to doubt the oil delivery port would be effected by engine pressure pulse in any significant way because it is outsi...

Clarence, most paint needs to be repeat coated within a short time, or left for quite a long time. But time recommendations vary with type of paint. I always follow manufacturers instructions.

Your paint problem isn't that uncommon. If you went to bare metal the first time, you may have to do so again. I have used epoxy primer, automotive, with good result, followed by matching brand automotive enamel.

Re: Converting to 12 volt and cdi

As mentioned, the numeric reference on the cylinder is a manufacturing reference, so that on the assembly line, parts can be matched for building the engine. I don't know of a seventh oversize piston. Don't think there were that many sizes over standard. The reference is to manufacturing tolerances,...

You are most fortunate in having a Sheriff's office willing to put out this much effort in so short a time. Reminiscent of law enforcement in a prior century. Perhaps when all is done, a little letter to the editor praising their efforts would be in order.

Re: The 2 the Max Project

Since the point of the exercise is to look good rather than be practical, I won't point out to you that at least half (if not just a bit more) of the welded bracket is pointless at this point because you welded right up to the midpoint of one of your lightening holes, reducing the strap width to a s...

Re: wanted wiseco piston rings

Joe, what you mentioned is a critical check that Bruce missed when running down the things to look at in a piston. The anti-rotation pins must fall on an uninterrupted cylinder wall or continuous port bridge to keep the rings from snagging in a port. Most two stroke pistons will have similar configu...

Re: Alternative to PB Blaster???

All penetrating oils are flammable, including PB, WD, or whatever. Acetone is so volatile that it will go away on its own in mere minutes, leaving the ATF or whatever behind. Using heat on top of flammable oils simply causes the oil to flash. Done it most of my life and still have most of my hair. W...

Re: Ace 100B+ No Spark

We aren't sparring. You simply don't wish to admit you are wrong on the question that you, yourself, posed: is it required that the primary coil be removed from the stator to be tested for short to ground? The answer to this questions is NO. It is not required that the coil be physically removed fro...

Re: Ace 100B+ No Spark

Read what I wrote Ed. Electrically isolated, coil lead disconnected, isolated from the harness. It was mentioned several times. I made no assumptions here other than the OP's bike won't fire. You can't test magneto components when all the wires are connected, so removing leads from the condenser is ...

Re: Ace 100B+ No Spark

Actually, Ed, no it doesn't. While the coil lead should be disconnected from the wiring harness so that it is isolated that way (and the lead should be disconnected anyway for any testing), the windings don't touch anything else but the iron core. Whether you have a short registered at the core, or ...

Re: Ace 100B+ No Spark

Technically, when doing just the short to ground test, you will get the same electrical answer whether the coil is mounted or dismounted -- assuming you also get continuity between engine case and stator plate, and between stator plate and coil core. Each of these pieces is screwed together creating...

Re: Ace 100B+ No Spark

I was suggesting dismounting the coils and visually inspecting areas that would otherwise not be visible. Two reasons. One, there is no spark, so it could be anything from simple to not so much. Might as well take a look. Two,it was immersed in water, and there could be corrosion or other fault in t...

Re: Ace 100B+ No Spark

By "spark plug connector" might I assume you mean the cap that connects to the spark plug? If so, I don't think I have ever seen a value for coil output for the Hodaka. Most such coils will produce voltage in the tens of thousands of volts. Not something I would have thought to test with a...

Re: ace 100 project

I have repaired many a brass float with a pinhole. Personally, I don't think you could put enough solder on it to change float level. Even perimeter repairs take only a tiny amount of solder. The problem with repairing hollow brass floats is heat. If you overheat the float while soldering, it will s...

Re: M94 Transmission issues

Rich will have a better idea of which carb will best fit your needs. My thoughts are that the 28 might do everything you want. If I was faced with constant tight stuff, hills and sand, I would probably drop back to an 03 cylinder mildly ported with the 28 Mikuni to try to get more midrange and low e...
