Re: Harry Taylor Cup video

Looks like front wheel washed out. Bars turned slightly to the left into the turn instead of keeping straight, shifting weight to the rear wheel and letting it drift out. Probably from sitting down. Happens to me. The turn was also a bit off camber by appearance and perhaps a bit loose on the inside...

Re: Mikuni carb and o-ring problem

The mathematical difference in diameters between seating surfaces would be the thickness of the o-ring installed, i.e., compressed. In its relaxed state, the o-ring should have a slightly smaller inner diameter and a slightly larger outer diameter to allow for proper compression. If you can install ...

Re: The 4th Hodaka - 2nd Road Toad!

As far as I can gather from the thread, this engine has not run in your presence at any time. If correct, then you are starting from the very beginning. Have you verified function of the ignition primary coil? Not shorted? Resistance more or less the same as, say, a Wombat? Blue and black wires runn...

Re: Shifter Grease - How Much and Type?? Model 98

Some folks pack in all that will go. I don't. The grease is there to lubricate the mechanism, not exclude water or dirt. On a dirt bike, servicing the shifter case is regular maintenance, but removing a half pound of grease is impossible without solvent and lots of time. Use good grease, but conside...

Re: Bikes from "The Great North"

Certainly you can ask Customs or look it up online, but your question will apply coming back home, not crossing into Canada, so it would be US Customs you need to ask. May we assume this is a vintage Hodie you are getting? My guess is that if you showed up at the border, as a US citizen, crossing ba...

Re: Life of fuel mix?

I have used Stabil for years. Yes, it does have a tad of alcohol, but since you use only a cap full to a gallon of gas, it isn't like you are going to have ethanol problems, and without looking at the label, I don't believe the alcohol used is ethanol, but more likely is methanol. The problem with e...

Re: Road Toad 100 kick start question ......

Mike, Your problem won't be found under the spring retainer. Feel free to pull the cap and spring off as they are easy enough to put back on. The problem is much more likely to be inside the cases. The kickshaft has a five lobe ramp inside with essentially roller bearings that ride the ramps. Over t...

Re: Life of fuel mix?

I have never tossed out gas from a motorcycle tank just because it has set around for a while. Synthetic oils remain dispersed in gas indefinitely. Two weeks is no time at all. I have started car engines on eleven year old gasoline, so two weeks isn't much time at all. Do you dump the fuel from your...

Re: Carburetor Tuning

The plug looks fine to me. Doing plug readings is a bit of an art form. Once the plug has run in the engine as long as yours has, it isn't easy to interpret just where the coloration has come from. You are probably looking at the porcelain and thinking it is lean. I am looking at the outer ring and ...

Re: Road Toad or Model 03 ignition stop switch

The problem here will be that very few folks have ever taken their switches apart, much less taken photos when they did. I have disassembled several such switches and frankly can't advise on what goes where, simply because I didn't take it apart. Having them jump apart before you can get a good look...

Re: Fin dampers

The dampers hurt nothing. Not used on Ace, very likely, because there was no perceived need. The fins on the Ace are shorter all around compared to the later alumiferric style. Shorter fins vibrate less or at least don't transmit high frequency as well. They will not remove dingle from the engine. A...

Re: Project Dirt Squirt

Hodaka's never qualified for emissions. No two stroke did, which is why you stopped seeing new ones on the road around 1980. Hodaka would have been forced out of the U.S. street bike market anyway by the early 80's unless DOT allowed an exception for low production numbers. There were sound restrict...

Re: Project Dirt Squirt

"Laws in effect at time of manufacture..." have nothing to do with how the machine was built, so the data plate has nothing to do with it either. At the time of manufacture, if a 98cc bike didn't have to have turn signals, then it doesn't have to have them now, either. If your car didn't c...

Re: Project Dirt Squirt

Legal for use on roads has little to do with manufacturer's original intent, and much more to do with how equipped. Research your local DMV rules. The answers should be there. Lights, signals, horn, tires big enough, proof of ownership. Not much else involved.

Re: B+ break in miles

You are right that mostly, EGTs are found on sno-mos and things like ultra light engines, but what those two toys have in common is fairly constant rpm in use. Aircraft particularly don't change rpm often, and snow machines have constantly variable drives that keep engine rpm relatively constant wit...

Re: Project Dirt Squirt

As nearly as I can recall, the at rest position of the lever can only be adjusted by changing the length of the rubber bump stop, and not by spline orientation. The lever may mount to the shaft only one way due to discontinuous splines. I would think it normal for the foot pedal to rest on the pipe.

Bill, Seizures result from several things, not all of which are directly reflected by EGT. For example, so called cold seizures or four corner seizures don't occur due to high combustion temperatures, and are the sort of seizures more commonly found during break in than well after an engine is thoro...

Re: B+ break in miles

The owners manual originally called for 500 miles break-in at 16:1 and 20:1 thereafter. This, of course, was predicated on using simple motor oil and not modern formula two stroke oils. But oil quality aside, there is a world of difference between half a dozen heat cool cycles and 500 miles. The sho...

Re: Fork springs

Original, unused springs are likely no longer available, and far as I know, no one makes springs for 40 year old Hodakas. Whether yours are sagged is something that we could probably determine by comparison between other springs here and there. But a properly built spring doesn't sag as much as urba...
