Re: Best sprocket combo for Model 99?

Stock gears were 14/56 as shown in the supplement: https://www.strictlyhodaka.com/v/vspfiles/photos/uploads/SH_99.jpg Having ridden only one model 99, I can't say what they all,do, but the one I road in the UCTT last year would cruise at 55 no problem. Frankly, 2 heat cycles doesn't break in a two s...

Re: Lighting Coil 93 Super Rat

I wonder if there is a legit lacquer designed for just that purpose. Some of these coils are getting impossible to find so a reliable repair scheme would be great. What a great Resonator Revisited article that would make. Yes, of course there is, as well as sources for new, lacquered wire to do a r...

Re: Lighting Coil 93 Super Rat

Output from a 100B system is nominally 45 watts at around 8 volts. Light output isn't modern by any definition. I think of the old Hodaka lights as about on par with a Boy Scout flashlight.

Re: 1976 RT

The piston port 100's are the older bikes with an iron cylinder. I think the 96 Dirt Squirt was about the last of the piston port 100's. The wrist pin part numbers for the 96 (92C) Dirt Squirt and your 02 are the same, so I am going to assume the older piston would mount on your rod assembly. The pa...

Here is a photo of the rim stamping from an original 100B rear rim:
IMG_0722.JPG
It reads Takasago 160 Ax 18 W OH-Y

Any 1.60 rim should have the same bead to bead width. Unless Hodaka used a wider rim in later models, rims should be the same.

I hope you aren't intending to ride on any Nittos you find. It has been years since they were produced for sale in the US. The Japanese company sold the motorcycle line to China a long time ago, and I don't know if they are still branded as such or have a new name. Google search leads back to a Quin...

Re: The 2 the Max Project

Double leading shoe brakes offer a mechanical advantage over the Hodaka design because of increased clamp force, but are more expensive to make, they are heavier, and probably harder to adjust correctly. Whether they are better or worse than a disc is not answerable because there isn't a direct comp...

Re: How do you tell one pipe from another?

Road Toad and Dirt Squirt pipes have different part numbers, 999160 versus 969160. Also, the Dirt Squirt is more like the Ace 100 or Super Rat frame, the Road Toad more like the later Super Rat/ Super Combat frame. The 97/98 frames are longer than were the Ace 100 frames. I would not expect a Dirt S...

Re: The 2 the Max Project

Caliper paint is found at the auto parts store. It is simply high temperature ceramic paint in colors that go well as brake caliper paint. Applied correctly it is fairly durable but if used on parts that do not naturally heat cycle, as brake parts do, it will never fully cure and will be easy to lif...

Maybe Fuji or one of the predecessors of Hodaka. Or a scooter of some sort. Otherwise, I have seen them on mini-bikes and early go-karts as external centrifugal clutches on the crank. Not the best location if rotational mass is an issue. I think Lee Fabry managed to remove the Hodaka clutch and moun...

About as simple as it gets. Shouldn't cost very much even if you have to buy a couple of items.

The torque grooves work. And until recently, I was running regular gas without issues. Better on premium, better yet on premium non-ethanol. But can't get it within 100 miles, so.... use what I can find. Premium w/10% ethanol and stabilizer, or 87 alcohol free. Octane can be raised chemically but no...

Well done to both of you. Not only showing style, but giving the 125 guys something to think about. Too bad Hodaka engineers didn't pay more attention back in the 70's. They could have built a class beating bike in the 250 class.

Measure your cage, and be ready to give Paul the measurement. If he has the part in his inventory, he can measure and verify.

Re: Ignition tune up

If the condenser tests okay, you could clipmthe wires running to the solder tab so that when it is time to reconnect things, the soldering would be done on the wire stubs, not on the condenser. But yes, the idea is to put the condenser up out of harms way, then run simple wire to wherever the condens...

Re: The 2 the Max Project

You will need a different spoke set with longer spokes. There may not be a set of spokes readily available for the smaller wheel. Nipple angles will be slightly off relaced as a 3 cross pattern, but mine survived the change and is still soundly laced 40 years later. As I recall, I made my own stainl...

Max, when you get around to relacing that wheel, lace it cross 3 instead of cross 2. A lot stronger.

Vic,

Throttle has to be open, otherwise it is like trying to suck air through a straw. If you got 115 - 120 with the throttle closed, you should do better throttle open. See if it will start.

Re: The 4th Hodaka - 2nd Road Toad!

Much better. Did you have the throttle wide open? How many times did you kick it over? Until pressure stopped rising? One of the shortcomings of a Hodaka in this regard is that the kick start device doesn't cycle the engine very much. Maybe two revs? Hook up the gauge, throttle wide open, tranny in ...

Re: More Clutch Questions

I suspect you are right, Ed, that my pressure piece was owner modified. Given the rather short shim stack I have, I would not be surprised to find that a standard piece would require no shims at all, and might not give adequate clearance. I will play with it during reassembly and see what I get. I n...
