Pre-mix ratio - break-in versus "broke-in"

Hey guys. Well, now that my model 99 Road Toad is up and running, I have a question on the premix ratio. Looking at the owner's manual, they recommended that the first tankful of fuel was to be a 32:1 mix in addition to the oil that was being pumped in from the oil injection pump to "aid break-...

Re: Timing the Hodaka

Yep...definitely up and running for sure! A few things to report: 1. Turn signals are fine when the bike is running. Apparently they work the same way the headlight does (primarily off the magneto). 2. I should have included a new float valve needle and seat when rebuilding the carb. I had a small l...

Re: Timing the Hodaka

Looks like a nice little device MTRob. Fortunately, my Toad fired up and ran quite nicely today after utilizing the old cellophane strip method recommended by Bullfrog. I'm going to take it for a little ride tomorrow morning for some "break-in time" and then I'll try to get some photos pos...

Re: Timing the Hodaka

Hey guys...using the blue & black wires from the plug under the seat provided the same result. For whatever reason, I just don't seem to be able to utilize the standard buzz-box or continuity light method on my bike. So...I went with the cellophane strip method and I appear to have things set ve...

Re: Timing the Hodaka

I'll give this new method a try in the morning. Thanks Dale. Just to be clear....I should also have the blue and black wires from the stator to the coil unplugged as well?

Re: Timing the Hodaka

Yep Dale...I noticed the other night that a blue and black wire ran up to that kill switch, so I made sure that the switch was in the run position. Now though, I may be about to make that embarrassing discovery or statement that I was worried about last night. I just checked for spark...and had none...

Re: Clutch & side cover question.

Hey Linc. I just put my cover on a few days ago, so I may be able to help. Once I had my cover screwed down, I too could barely lift the lever on the outside of the clutch case cover. Once I connected the cable to both this lever and the one up on the bars though, I had no problem pulling in the lev...

Re: Timing the Hodaka

The kill switch is in the center "run" position (as opposed to the left or right "off" positions). Hopefully that's where it needs to be for this method. I did as you suggested and connected one lead from my tester to the black wire going to the coil and the other to the blue wir...

Re: Timing the Hodaka

OK guys....absolutely nothing about how this method of setting the timing is making sense to me, even though I truly think it should! I went outside today and watched the needle on my analog tester in both the resistance and continuity modes and there is absolutely NO movement in the needle or chang...

Re: Timing the Hodaka

Well Bullfrog...reading your response makes me feel good. I looked at that clump of wires on the condenser earlier and thought the same thing; how can the circuit be "broken" when all those wires are soldered together? It's starting to make sense. So let me ask this...instead of the light ...

Re: Timing the Hodaka

Well, that certainly helps. I was under the impression that when the points opened, a buzzer would stop buzzing, a beeper would stop beeping or a light would go out. I must not be fully understanding just exactly what happens when setting the timing this way. Isn't there a completely open circuit wh...

Re: Timing the Hodaka

Well Max...what looks so simple in your directions here has me completely stumped. I clamp one of my little alligator clips from my continuity tester to the crankcase and the other to the black wire that runs from the stator plate up to the coil and I get a consistent beep from my tester. That's whe...

Dykes ring orientation question

Just a quick question for the group. Because Paul at SH didn't have any +.20 pistons left for my Road Toad, I ended up buying a +.30 Super Rat piston from him. He said the single ring piston would work fine. I just got the cylinder back yesterday from the mechanic who bored it for me and will likely...

Re: Soldering to the condenser - a better way?

Nike it is! (Even though I'm a New Balance guy.) LOL OK...now it makes sense to me. As long as the condenser is anywhere in the circuit, it will do its job. Of course now I just need to research exactly what it is that a condenser does. :) The 617-027 part is plentiful on eBay. Many are not listed a...

Re: Soldering to the condenser - a better way?

Boy...that looks really nice Danny! I'm going to go out and check to see if my wiring is the same as what you have on your 03 Wombat. I'm thinking it is, as when I compare the electrical component specs of the two bikes...everything is identical. I am curious though...how is it that by simply teeing...

Re: Soldering to the condenser - a better way?

I'll have to ask around to see if anyone I know has one of the old soldering irons, Ed. It sure sounds like a better & quicker way to go. I seem to remember also seeing a thread somewhere regarding the relocation of the condenser...up under the tank maybe? It looks like at least some of the wire...

Soldering to the condenser - a better way?

Hey guys...after reading through one horror story after another of members trying to get that clump of 4 wires soldered to the top of the condenser, I'm wondering if anyone has come up with a better way to do it that won't require me to order a handful of condensers to replace all the ones I screw u...

Re: Carb cleaning...a chemical carb dip or the Hornady Hot Tub?

Yep...that's the one thing I noticed too. I probably should have tried it without the heating function first. The Hornady manual even makes mention that the heater can turn brass to a darker color, so they don't recommend heating when cleaning cases. The thing is, the heat helps remove the crud bett...

Re: Carb cleaning...a chemical carb dip or the Hornady Hot Tub?

OK guys...the results are in. The images below are after one 30 minute cycle thru the Hornady Hot Tub ultrasonic cleaner. Temp was set to 140 F and the solution was about 25% Pine-Sol & 75% distilled water. Standard spray-down with brake cleaner was performed before I brought the carb in the hou...

Re: Carb cleaning...a chemical carb dip or the Hornady Hot Tub?

Perhaps you're not getting me here...I already OWN the ultrasonic cleaner...for cleaning brass cases and firearm parts. I certainly wouldn't go out and buy one just to clean a motorcycle carb. I'm aware that the thinner will clean a lot of things. Just looking to see if an ultrasonic cleaner will do...

Re: Carb cleaning...a chemical carb dip or the Hornady Hot Tub?

I'm going to give it a try Danny. I did a bit more research last night and it seems quite a few people have had very good results with the ultrasonic cleaners and....wait for it....Pine-Sol! If the before and after shots in some of the You Tube videos I watched are any indication, this could be a ve...

Re: Relieving the exhaust port bridge - a 41 year old mystery SOLVED?

Thank you Danny. When Doug has time to respond, maybe he can give us an idea of how far down from the top or up from the bottom the holes are drilled as well. Also, can we safely assume that there is no weakening of the piston that would occur here with the two small holes? I would think not, but ju...
