Re: Wheel Bearings

IMO it depends on the end use. A show bike or a bike ridden a couple thousand street miles a year would get good service from sealed bearings. Higher loadings or higher speed or severe environments would need better lubrication. Pack, clean, and repack. One tool for my Beemer is a bearing greaser. I...

Re: tank badge adhesive

Is The Right Stuff an RTV compound like silicone adhesive or a solvent-based compound like Goop? If solvent-based, I'd have a concern that the solvent would affect the paint on the back of the badge.

VXB is a top-notch source that
I did not know. Their Heim joints would be much better. They have RH/LH threaded joints for precise adjustment, tho two RH thd'd ones would be adequate and easier to fab.

Re: The 2 the Max Project

So the pattern is "up for first" and down moving up thru the gears. And I'll betcha you can move the rearset linkage lever 180* around to get that new-fangled std pattern. I guess you made the linkage lever ratio 1:1 to the input lever throw the same, and know that the lever throw can be m...

Re: The 2 the Max Project

On painting engine parts: The Beemer has a natural sand-cast finish, unpainted, that weathers to a nice patina. I knock the oil, dirt and mud off with degreaser every couple of years whether it needs it or not. The painted side cases on the Hodaka seem to be wear items that will chip, scratch and du...

Re: The 2 the Max Project

It depends on what the bike is going to be. Will it be a concours, parts-correct bike of the type of that era? Or will it be your interpretation of a bike of this type using current parts and technology. Your "daily rider", so to speak. The Amal is a fine carb but is it necessary to comple...

But if it's Sat afternoon and you just sproinged your last circlip circlip trying to install it, you don't want to wait a week to order a factory part when the equivalent can be easily made.

Re: Special tools

Good thinking on the home-rolled spring clips. Bosch starters use the a similar clip/retainer on their Bendix shafts. 10mm dia, much heavier and a bear to install. I made a similar tool to the Hodie tool, and I bought the Hodie tool early on. It's helpful but not essential, but at least I supported ...

Re: The 2 the Max Project

Art is part of any project. Verily so.

One rule of thumb on RC aircraft built for competition, which have to be light and strong: make the part lighter and lighter til it breaks, then strengthen it so it doesn't break.

Re: The 2 the Max Project

You have certainly read up and researched the subject adequately. Give it your best shot and if it breaks, improve it. All these niggling details can drive one nutso, but it is so nice to look at the product years later.

Re: The 2 the Max Project

Max, google "rear sets rearsets" and review what others have done. And even at add-on passenger pegs. This will at least give you an idea of what worked before. The Van Tech caper on eBay went bonkers!! This was my first serious auction and I pursued it strongly. I'm convinced that one oth...

I like it. The OCD part of me says "it'll be twisty and bendy" but the Practical part of me says "try it and see". Maybe you could run a secondary stay from the footpeg area down to the lower frame tube. Triangulation is spiritual. I'm having my own obsessive-compulsive episode m...

Re: The 2 the Max Project

Oooch, that is unusual. I rarely, if ever, break a larger "Letter" drill. Smaller "Number" drills, all the time. Don't 'spose it's a bad run of the bits?

One of my design criteria revolves around repairability in the event of a mishap.

The clutch-holding tool is multi-purpose. Not only does it hold the clutch, it also holds the primary gear, the flywheel/ alternator rotor and the output sprocket.

Re: The 2 the Max Project

That works. Although I know CAD-drafting programs and have had access to the usual lathes, mills and saws, I prefer to draw with paper and pencil and use handtools. I'm not a complete Luddite, I have an old lathe and use oxycetylene.

Looks good.

Good practice to use a template/mockup in the design phase. Ordinary poster board works well, but I like photo matte board.
