Re: Crankcase seals?
Ed, Thanks for all the information. I understand most of it but I'm not all of it. Is there a rebuild kit that would hit most of the key parts that I should change if I start breaking it down? I don't want to cut any corners but I also don't want to do too much. I still think I should wait to run it...

Re: Crankcase seals?
Ok, apparently or obviously I'm not seeing this cavity. But I'll trust your assessment. I'm more of a walleye guy. I live on Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin. So I do a lot of jigging, slip bobbering, and mostly trolling. We catch a lot of different species. Walleyes, Sauger, perch, crappie, gills, white...

Re: Crankcase seals?
Thanks Ed, when I put my mind to something I can easily become obsessed. Did I mention I like to fish! Lol. Quick question though, after looking at the schematic the breather is located on the inside of the crank where the crank seal is also. So if it's hissing out that breather then the crank seal ...

Re: Crankcase seals?
That probably also explains why when I would run it for a few seconds the gear lube would look very aerated for a lack of a better way put it. Probably not so much fuel getting into it but air. It's all starting to make sense now.

Re: Crankcase seals?
Sounds like I'll be splitting the case if that is the problem. Once I do that is there anything else I should replace while it's apart? Uggghhh!

Re: Crankcase seals?
As soon as it gets to six it leaks out the breather until 5. Then from there it takes about 2-3 minutes to drop from 5-4 psi. I guess I need to replace some seals? Which ones is the question. Is it going to hurt the bike to run it the way it is?

Re: Crankcase seals?
Yes, that is the breather I was referring to. So any ideas to where I should go from here? Is this a red light not to run the bike?

Re: Crankcase seals?
So I hooked up a pressure tester that I made tonight and my results were that at about 6psi the air started come through some sort of stud looking vent off of the crank cast I believe. Then between 5-4 psi it would hold pretty steady. Is this what I should expect to see?

Re: Crankcase seals?
I just looked around for some different set ups for pressure testing. I think I'll invest in those parts so do this periodically. Thanks for guiding me in the right direction.

Re: Crankcase seals?
I did perform a smell test but I don't have the greatest olfactory system. I will hold off on any motor work until I get the carb parts and petcock, then refill gear lube. I could have had enough fuel get by the carb if he float valve wasn't working good. I didn't have a ton of fuel in the tank but ...

Re: Crankcase seals?
Hey guys, As far as the gear lube goes, I had taken the cover off originally and emptied it all before I filled back up. So everything in there was new. I will repeat the process once I get the petcock fixed and new float valve assy. So I'm pretty sure any intrusion would have been fuel since I have...

Crankcase seals?
Ok, so I've posted in the past week about my Super Rat (98) that I recently bought from my uncle. The bike probably sat for at least 20-30 years without being started. Not sure what kind of issues it would of had when it was still being used. I did get the bike to start up relatively easy after clea...

Ok, Good! I'll get it all back together tomorrow and see if I have different results. I'll let you know how it turned out. Thanks again for taking the time to explain things and being patient with me!

Re: fuel leak 1974 super rat
Dale, the other thing that came to me, when I reassmbled the floats in the bowl, I'm not sure if I had them orientated correctly. Should the little studs that hit the arm to be closer to the bottom or should the they be up higher with the tapered part of the float towards the bottom. I guess that is...

Re: fuel leak 1974 super rat
Ok, the float valve and pin look to be good. I was wrong about the spring. It's definitely there and seems to function. I did check the float arm's position and it seems to be about 1/8 to 1/4 higher then the surface of the carb where the bowl and carb meet. I'm assuming the "tang" is the ...

Re: fuel leak 1974 super rat
Dale, Would this also explain the fuel ( I assume) getting into my gear case. I checked that today and it looked diluted and fizzy on the dipstick or could that be another problem? I also noticed oil spatter from the exhaust on my basement wall .

Re: fuel leak 1974 super rat
If I remember correctly, the pin on mine was flat on the non pointy end. I might be wrong but I'll take it apart and ccheck it again. I know the pointy end had some areas of discoloration which could have wearing or buildup.

Re: fuel leak 1974 super rat
Dale I'm pretty sure I grasp what you're saying. Question?
The pin that is in the float valve seat iso spring loaded, could you explain that to me because I didn't see any spring opposite the pointy side of the pin.

Re: fuel leak 1974 super rat
DDVORAK - It seems intermittent. I can leave the pet cocks open and there is no leakage. Just seems after I start it up initially. I did take the carb apart and cleaned it up as much as I could. I'm not a motorhead, I can take things apart, clean them up and reassemble. I will have to brush up on my...
