Finished my 73 DS project. Well, mostly. Need a front mud flap and bolts for the front of the gas tank, but wanted to get a picture up. Thanks to the several guys who helped with answers to my rookie questions!

Foot change gasket
Gents, this is perhaps the lamest question ever... but on an early Dirt Squirt 100 I'm not sure where to apply the sticky foam gasket on the inside foot change cover. Specifically, part 38 on the "A" schematic. I can't find aany residue from the original and am not exactly sure where to ap...

Re: Early Dirt Squirt Exhaust Nut (flange)
My day was frustrating, nothing to do with the Squirt, so I needed something to take my frustration out on. Had previously soaked the threads with penetrating oil. Added some heat and two good wacks with a dull cold chisel and a BFH and off it came. Yeah, there was no gasket underneath so hence the ...

Re: Early Dirt Squirt Exhaust Nut (flange)
Thanks gents, I think it does make a lot of sense waiting until I get the frame back for powder coating and can get the engine remounted. Then I'll get medieval on it.

Re: Replacing shift lever spring
Thank you much. Once I got into it I saw that it's pretty straight forward. I see now that the selector mechanism is independent of the transmission. What a treat working on this little bike!

Replacing shift lever spring
I don't have a workshop manual, are they available somewhere? Anyway, just before I parked my early Dirt Squirt last fall I thought I got it stuck in gear. Turned out to be a broken shift lever return spring. So I have a new one and assume installation is the reverse of removal. However is there any...

Re: Early Dirt Squirt Exhaust Nut (flange)
Apparently unscrewing the exhaust flange is, in fact, NOT a lot of fun. I have a large channel lock pliers and I have a bench vice but I'm not sure how best to remove the flange. Mounting the cylinder in the vice causes me concern, not wanting to damage it or clamp it too tight. And the pliers are l...

Re: Early Dirt Squirt Exhaust Nut (flange)
Thank you both, it's making sense now. I hadn't planned on refurbishing the cylinder so perhaps I'll just leave the nut alone. On the other hand I do have a new gasket on its way and like I mentioned there was a pretty steady leak when the engine was running. I'll soak the neck of the nut with a pen...

Early Dirt Squirt Exhaust Nut (flange)
Hi again folks, I wonder if you can advise me as to how the exhaust pipe fastens to the head. From what I can tell I appear to have the correct exhaust, but all that was required to remove it, other than the frame mounts, was removal of the two springs. I see from the schematics that there should ha...

Re: Cleaning engine case
@Viclioce - mine appear to have been painted with an aluminum coloured paint. Just the case sides, so I assume this was someone "freshening up" a number of years ago. I'm certain it will come off with no challenge and I'll decide then whether to clear coat it or just give it a polish and c...

Re: Cleaning engine case
Thanks for the tip Charlie. I used a specialty cleaner for cleaning my house air conditioner coils once, I think it was called Cal-blast. I see the Nu-Calgon company has a bewildering list of similar cleaners - is there one you would specifically recommend?
Thanks again,
Robert

Re: Cleaning engine case
Thanks for the feeback, guys. Ball burnishing sounds and looks like a great idea, however I'm located in a services deprived area. But I'll strip the case covers and do a bit of a polish before I decide whether or not to either paint or clearcoat. This won't be a concours garage queen or a factory c...

Cleaning engine case
Hey folks, newbie here. I picked up an early Dirt Squirt a while back as a way to spend more time in the garage. It's actually a decent restoration candidate, but I'm not a total purist and just want it to look presentable. I stripped the bike and am having the frame powder coated a close-ish colour...
