Ace 90 frame

Have an Ace 90 frame that is stamped 0044. Does that mean it was the 44th Hodaka frame to ever come off the assembly line? Also, what is the worth of a frame that is free of cracks/bends (roughly)? Thanks.

Greg Watkins shift cover rebuild

After recently seeing a video on the forum of Greg Watkins’ new shift shaft bushing, I decided to send off my shift cover to him for service. After a couple very friendly phone calls and extremely quick turnaround, I received it in the mail yesterday. I told Greg that I wasn’t looking for a cover to...

Re: Clutch issue?

Just call me Mom, "Where is your helmet young man?!!!" If you grab the end of the foot change shaft (the shift lever attaches to it) and try to wiggle it around, I'll bet you'll see freeplay (slop) you could measure with a ruler. If so, it is time for a shift cover rebuild. Ed PS: Did I i...

Re: Clutch issue?

Here are some vids of my first time riding my Frankendaka since I got it four years ago in boxes, completely disassembled and in pieces. It’s taken me awhile to get it going because I work at Ducati and most of my life is consumed working on everyone else’s bikes besides my own. And honestly, I just...

Re: Clutch issue?

Tahoe, did the clutch work for you on the short ride? Matt - trial-and-error method of clutch adjustment? Ed Yes Ed, it did! But I still do have a slight shift issue. I already went through the shift mechanism measurement process, along with the trial and error method, and finally ended up using th...

Re: Clutch issue?

Thanks for the replies. Matt, that totally made sense. Was thinking in more “modern bike” terms. Ed, yes to all of that except for a new clutch bushing. I took it on a little ride around the neighborhood and it was a blast. Still some shift issues, but hopefully I can sort that out. I tried to post ...

Clutch issue?

Finally got the shifting mechanism working properly (using the added o-ring trick) and fired off my freshly rebuilt motor yesterday. Runs superb! Shut it down and figured I would test ride the bike today. While still on my lift, I went to test the clutch operation by pulling the lever in while it wa...

Re: Shifting issue

Ed, that is a very interesting, temporary fix. It makes sense that an o-ring would act as a stopper and prevent the control shaft from going in too far. Is the excessive play caused by the end of the shifter arm wearing smaller, or by the slot on the ratchet wearing larger, or both? I would be more ...

Shifting issue

I’m still on the homestretch of my Super Rat rebuild before I put it back in the frame, and I’m finding that the only shift I’m having an issue with is from 5th to 4th. The rest of the shift pattern is good. In order for me to get out of 5th and down to 4th is if I just grab a hold of the end of the...

Petcock thread pitch

Hey all, did a little research in the archives, and of course used a thread pitch gauge up against the brass petcock threads on my chrome tank, and came to the conclusion that the threads are 1/8-27. Just wanted to confirm this with others before I use the wrong tap. Thanks! (I did notice the 28 npt...

Re: wood block

Just screw 2”x4” together and make a box/frame in any size you desire- obviously something the size that’ll hold a Hodaka motor. We use 2”x6” at Ducati, as the motors are bigger and lay deeper, depending on what position you put them in.

Re: (98) Super Rat shift assembly

Thanks Ed, I will do my best with that info. I’m making the measurement with the cover off the motor. I’m extending a straight edge off the mating surface plane (with the inner cover detached as well), and taking a measurement off that, perpendicular to the pin. The reason I asked about the shift pa...

(98) Super Rat shift assembly

I understand there’s been numerous threads on Hodaka shifting assemblies, and I’ve been reading as much of them as I can to better understand them so I’ll try and make this a brief inquiry. On the (98)Super Rat, is the shift pattern one up,then four down? If so, when measuring from the magneto cover...

I can’t seem to find a torque spec for the countershaft sprocket nut. Could anyone give me a number that has worked well? Thanks!

Re: Left side crankshaft washer

Thanks a lot for taking the time to respond. I value the advice here. I went ahead and split the cases in order to install the needed washer on the left side of the crank. In my box of Hodaka parts, I have these two washers left over. The bigger one is an extra one I had that I believe goes on the l...

Re: Left side crankshaft washer

ddvorak, unfortunately I just sealed the cases up last night. I spoke with Roger Lippiatt this morning regarding this part, and he told me that if by chance it wasn’t installed (or forgotten about), it wasn’t a big issue, as the installed clutch will keep the crank from sliding to the left. Has anyo...

Left side crankshaft washer

I’m in the process of putting my engine back together. Between sifting through my parts and trying to make sense of some of the schematics, I’m not sure if the left side crankshaft washer is placed on the left crank spindle before the left hand case is installed, or if it goes on after and is part o...
