B+ Rear Fender Needed

Post by VBS52 »

I’m in need of a rear fender for my ‘71 B+ I’m recommissioning. Bought it new in ‘73 as a left over and have kept it since. Original rear fractured in line w the rear light assy and I replaced it w a Preston Petty. Would like to put original stainless back on.

Not sure what the differences are between Ace 100 rear, B and B+. Maybe someone can advise if they are interchangeable though part #’s are different.

Not trying to confuse but as I read it the ace100 rear fender 928630 was also on the 100B beginning model 92A confusing but some call it a 92b also. Most of the 92A's, 92B and 92B+ used fender 928630A. Clarence

Thanks Clarence, no confusion at all; makes sense.

So the question is what are the diffs between the Ace 100 rear fender 928630 and the B/B+ rear 928630A? Adding an A rather than changing the p/n by a digit seems like not much changed. So could 928630 fit a B+ w/o looking bad? Given the change in wheel size from 17” to 18” maybe the 928630A fender is slightly longer. But will the holes on the earlier fender align w mounting points in B+?

Thanks Victor. Yes just the rear. Luckily the orig front is well preserved probably due to replacing it w a Petty early on. I look forward to your photos. -Mark

Must be awful cold not to be able to go to the garage! Was just cross country skiing in ME and it was 7. That was cold…..once you stopped moving!
When you do get a chance I would appreciate hearing back from you. Thanks!!

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the rear fender used on ACE 100 and B, p/n 928630 and the rear fender for the B+, p/n 928630A? Thinking that since it's just the addition of an A, rather than a different p/n that there isn't a lot of difference, but don't want to find out the hard way.

As said all three 100B's (92A, 92B/B+ and 92B+) have the same back fender. Do you have one lined up yet? ---------- Clarence

Hey Clarence,

Found in the workshop manual that there was a design change for the B+ that as of frame A-48913 the rear fender p/n changed by adding an A to the previous p/n of 928630 due to "Altered tailight position".

Best I can try to figure this out is that the metal stamping for the tailight / license plate holder, changed from the B to the B+ and that resulted in the tailight assy maybe moving a bit further down the fender and the drillings moving to enable that.

I'm not sure it's that big of deal but don't have anything to compare. Anyway, to answer your question, I did find a fender and while the seller can't be sure of whether it comes from a B or B+ I'm taking a chance and will buy it.

Frame number 48913 was for a 92A their frame numbers ran from A38713 to A51012. The 92B started with frame number A51013, it was dubbed a B+ in about June 19071. The factory 92B+ serial number started with frame# A67613. Glad you found one. Clarence

Great news! Sorry I couldn’t help. All those rear fenders were all Wombat fenders. Really thought I had an Ace rear fender in the bunch!

Once you get the tail light on, you won’t notice much of a difference. It would take a critical eye having experience with both to know the difference between a B & B+ rear fender. You’ll be fine! :ugeek: Victor

Victor aren't the Ace 100B fenders 92B and 92B+ the exact same? I think the majority of the 92A's are also?? Clarence

Hey Clarence and Victor thank you for the support.
For a data point on this B vs B+, I have had my bike as a new, leftover, since March 1973 and the mfg date is July 1971. Frame number A59008.

Re the difference in rear fender, the Official Hodaka Workshop Manual, History of Change and Modification of Hodaka ACE 100B lists that in July 1970 the rear fender p/n changed by adding an “A” to the existing p/n, I.e. 928630 became 928630A and Remarks state “Altered tailight position”. I’m assuming the fender drillings for tailight mounting and wiring entry changed to move tailight a bit lower on the fender. Not sure why. Maybe DOT compliance?

Interestingly the same wording was used again in October 1970 and the p/n stayed the same. This time the tailight /stoplight assy also changed due to license plate angle change.

This is heavy duty minutiae but interesting for someone like me wanting to have a correct fender.
