Wombat possessed by the Devil

Post by Heeto63 »

Hello group...
My 73 Wombat resto is complete but I'm having issues (fuel I believe)...
I ordered and installed a carb kit and double checked my float level before I put it together...
In order for it to run, I have to have the air screw turned almost all the way in, hold the throttle wide open and it'll fire up on the first kick when its stone cold. It runs but idles poorly when cold...

Once it's been running for a bit, I have to turn the air screw back to slow the rev's down. Once it's been running and warm and I shut it off, IT WILL NOT START!!!! It seems to want to sputter a bit but I've almost killed myself kicking it over!!!!

Any ideas what the hell I've done wrong????

Sounds like your pilot circuit is plugged. The pilot circuit includes all of the internal passageways of the carburetor body and not just the pilot jet.

Sure sounds carb related. Hows it run with choke on? Did you install an in line gas filter? Did you check carb flange face for flatness? They warp after 50 years. New manifold gasket and O ring? Sometimes you have to clean them multiple times.

I’m with Dale & Ed on this one. Pilot circuit dirty, somewhere.

There’s a great article on cleaning the Mikuni in the back issues of the Resonator Revisited. Check it out if your a member of the Hodaka Club! Volume 1, Issue 3 & Volume 1, Issue 9!

If you’re not, why not? It’s only $24 a year and money well spent if for no other reason than to have access to all those How To articles! :ugeek: Victor
