What Paint?

I don't see the Red Orange paint for Ace 100's on The Strictly Hodaka site. Am I just missing it or are people using something different? I saw the red for the Model 03 color but not the older red orange color. I would like something in a spray can if possible, but I do have a compressor & spray gun. Thx!

OK I found the Early Hodaka Red, but it comes in a small can. Paul, what is the volume of the can and is it spray ready or does it need any reducer or hardened? Does it need a clear coat or is it a single stage paint? ; D Victor

I have used the Early Red paint on my Ace 90. It comes by the quart and requires a reducer. I used the PreVal spray system that Paul also offers. I was happy with the outcome.

I did use a clearcoat over mine.

Well, I think I found a pretty good color match. It may not be exact, but I think it looks pretty close. Especially when you consider fade and chalking of the OEM paint. Here's a photo of the Ace 100 chain guard which I cleaned and gave a quick coat on a portion of it. Tell me what you think?

Of course, I'll be stripping the old paint off and putting down a coat of primer first. But I think this may work well! ; D Victor

For anyone interested, here's the paint I got! Bought it at Lowe's & it's a Valspar Outdoor Color in red. It appears to be their equivalent to the Rustoleum brand, as it says Anti-Rust on the can. At $4.97 a can, I figure you can't beat it! Just sayin'... ; D Victor

I too am studying what paint to use on my "Day One'' project. I've decided to go with a bright red frame in the Hodaka tradition. Mine's not even near stock and I've been looking at some of the new automotive reds that are really bright such as found on new Ford and Chevy trucks (and Ducatis). I want something I can do myself and be retouch-able preferably with spray cans in that it's a trail bike. A good friend of mine works in the automotive paint industry and recommended paint with a hardener for those types of applications. Clear coat might be an option. Since some of these options can be very expensive to buy all the products I think I'll talk to the local body shop for an estimate to add to our discussion.

All up in the air for now and I'm still in the discovery mode.

Rustoleum High Performance Enamel red (silver can) is very close to "proper" color on chainguard (laying in frame) that was already painted with SH paint when I got it. I think I bought it at Auto Zone but it's been awhile. Reasonably run- and splatter-resistant when applying, pretty tough when cured.

My Grandson and I are doing a Dirt Squirt project for the Resonator Revisited. I bought some Rustolium Apple red enamel for all the red parts, air cleaner, frame, chain guard, etc. I think this type has primer already in it, but of course I used primer first. Look in the RR for the next installment. Probably late spring. The weather will be nicer then.

OK, you guys are talking me into trying Rust-Oleum automotive enamel. I tried some Krylon Dual Superbond paint plus primer Banner Red a while back and it just wasn't very intense. Rust-Oleum rates well in one comparison test. We'll see.

I used the local Auto Body and Paint Supply store and asked them to do a color match. We used the area under the tank since it looked like it had never seen daylight since the day it was sprayed. After we had the color I compared it to a few other bikes and parts that looked like they hadn't faded and after a few more adjustments I think this is as close as I could get and it's good enough that you couldn't tell when I painted a little on some of those parts.

I went to all this trouble because I wanted a good quality paint that would last, be easy to repair, and be resistant to flying rocks. It's a dual stage paint with catalyzed clear coat. I don't know if I'd be able to get the color codes but it's about as perfect a match as I think possible. I asked them to save it as Hodaka Red so we wouldn't have to re-match it on future projects or spot repairs. They'll even put it into an aerosol can for me.

It is a little pricey, but I do like the color. If I remember right, it was ~$25.00 for a single spray can, and $20 for clear coat.

A quick comparison of a couple of kinds of paint. It's hard to see differences on a computer screen but that Rust-oleum 7564 Safety Red visually looks really good especially against Krylon Dual Banner Red. The Krylon Dual also lifted the paint on a second wet coat several days later. I think we can mark that one off the list.

I think if I was doing a show bike rather than a trail bike I might go with some expensive automotive paint with clear coat but it's hard to beat the convenience and retouch-ability of a spray can. I think I might go with the Rust-oleum 7564 Safety Red for match and convenience.

Mike and Rick, I didn't try your colors but they also looked good on the screen.(As did Rogers.)

You know I'm still not totally happy with this paint. It's intense but not as glossy as I would like. It's still too cold for paint and I think there's still time for more research. I'll keep you posted with my changing opinions.

Some paint will not survive a little gas and when you have done all the work it is not fun to see your paint wash off with gas. Also some paint you can spray additional coats but only within a certain amount of time. But you could not apply a additional heavy without letting the paint completely cure., I hit the seams the joints and all the hidden places and complete coverage with lighter coats and on my final coat I put on a wet coat that is glassy and shines. I know there are experts out there that are pros. You cannot paint in cold damp weather. Just my $0.35 worth.

Hey Bruce, My shop is heated but shares a central heating system to the house. I can spot samples but I can't spray a large project without running all of us out of the house. This is the reason I'll have a bit more time before spring to try a few other things. Clarence just brought up a good point about resistance to gasoline. I'll try to test that on a few samples. One of the things I tried on my black framed 94A was Duplicolor automotive spray cans but it scratched easily. I've got a while to fiddle with it, spring does't seem eminent soon.

Thanks Max, this paint question comes up a couple times in a year. I think it might be time to try using current, easy to get common Brands of paint for frames, both red and black, and Eng. paints info study done on each paint brand and a short results info listed, so the Hodaka World of today can use it as a guide, I know that many, many of the Ol timers have used diff types of paint throughout the years, but we need something on modern brands. I also want to point out that Paul of Strictly Hodaka, has spent a lots of money and time creating great paints and supplies same, I would I recommend them to anyone, but lots of times as you say I want to just touch up a frame, you go and pick up paint can at local paint suppliers. I'm sure Paul's paint is superior in every way. I like to do things right but for a play bike cans might work. Also my project is so far from original I might go with something even brighter that's in the automotive world. I can also spray with a gun and might go that way yet. Usually there is a difference between a $5 and $100 plus paint job. As we all know you get what you pay for.

Here's another "what paint" question: are the cases and wheel hubs the same color on a model 97 Super Combat? If so, what color? If not what colors? Rustoleum Aluminum seems like a good choice, but I'd like other opinions. Same question on the model 98 Super Rat hubs. I did the motor with PJ1 Satin Black and it looks real nice. Thanks. JackM
