Ace 100 top speed

Post by megawat »

I have a 1970 Ace 100 which runs great and has factory gearing. problem: bike tops out at around 38 MPH. Engine is stock with new carb purchased from Strictly Hodaka around 6 months ago. Any suggestions and what top speed should I expect?

I think an Ace 100 is similar to a road toad 100, I seem to remember the road toad I owned going almost fast enuf to ride on the highway, but it seemed like it was whining around 50 mph to the point that it just wasnt meant for highway speeds. If it has a top speed of 38 you could probably change sprockets I would think. The Wombat 125 I own now seems to be geared slightly better. It feels like he could maybe hit highway speeds a little easier. But im still waiting for my Vermont registration to find out.

I hit 57 on my ACE 100 (also a 1970) within the past week. But that was really winding it out (and downhill, of course). On the roads it seems "happiest" around 40 or a little above.

I was able to cruise easily at 45 mph on my Ace 90. I could get it to 55 if I "had" to, but rarely did. If I remember right, I was using 15/32 sprockets. Headwinds didn't pull me down too much but I could still cruise at 45mph.

When I was selling Hodakas in that time period we had a new Ace 100 with that problem. After trying everything in the book I changed the exhaust pipe to an aftermarket pipe. The bike gained 15 MPH! I would check for obstructions in the pipe. Check the exhaust port carbon build-up. Good luck! Maxie

I think Maxis is right on.I think you have a plugged exhaust pipe. I also have a 1970 Ace 100. It likes to cruse at 45 mph and tops out at about 57 mph.
