Cylinder Porting

Post by fortunet1 »

Has anyone had porting done ? And does it make a big difference ?
And who does good work porting ? (setting aside thirdstones amazing work)... maybe I'm talking mild porting...comparatively ?
While I'm learning a lot about these little engines everyday I think I have the makings of a Hot Rod Rat.
24 mm carb getting the full rebuild kit, new 080 over piston coming from Terry, huge four reed valve.

Tonight I watched Greg(you tube) machine and install a custom bushing for the shifter shaft ...thought
that was cool enough to drop him an email. I guessed they were So Cal. but it looks like Arizona. At any rate its in a perfect size box for that case and ready to go out.

I'm in no hurry to build this engine, mainly because there is soooo much to do on two frames, brakes, levers, cables, swing arms,etc..sheesh...it never ends. I've set aside any frame work for now and concentrating on engine parts alone.
Cheers to All
Have a great Weekend

And the reason for the reed carefully brochure was that ,we all did them ourselves in the day and you can do it too, it worked just fine. Being of the shakey age I had Rich Gagnon do the last one for me. The quality of ( Rich Talored Porting ) is pure ART. ---------------- Clarence

The Reed Carefully brochure helped turn many Hodakas into a 'different animal'. Chainsaw files and rat tail files (sometimes chucked into a reciprocating saw) gave the low budget operation some options.

Thanks for each and everyone who adds knowledge to my present build.
I have one cylinder already set up with a reed valve...and two other cylinder candidates.
One with a four bolt (to the jug) manifold and one with a two bolt.

Hopefully the 080 over cylinder will clean up for the new piston coming so I won't have to use the others.
Still interested in the porting ...might be a wise move in the end.

What is the "reed carefully brochure" ? Can I view it online ?

Thanks Guys !!!

If it’s a 100 with a 4 bolt intake, it’s likely a Super Rat cylinder. Got any pics? :ugeek: Victor

The ace 90, ace 100, ace 100B models 92A, 92B, 92b+ and the super rats models 93, 93A and 93B could all see a great increase in performance from the reed valve. ---------- Clarence

I'll get back to you with the photos of the three cylinders I have....(In Palm Springs this week.) Engine # M7480 (93 A Super Rat) has a bigger four bolt pattern on the cylinder than the other intake four bolt cylinder...

That is the cylinder I'm hoping to save at 080 over. Hoping to run out to the Hodaka yard in Arizona the beginning of next week to search out some much needed parts.

Thanks for your help Victor (and the others)
