Model 94 vs 94A interchange
Model 94 vs 94A interchange
After seeing all the nice looking bikes at Hodaka Days this past June, I decided to begin a search for an early Wombat. In the next few months I was able to find two of them; a model 94 and 94A. Both need a new piston to run, but between the two bikes I have enough parts to restore one or the other, not both, and I'm wondering if the wiring harness can be interchangeable between them. From what I can tell, the only difference between the two wiring harnesses is that the 94A had wiring for signal lights and also implemented a current limiter, (which I think I'll keep). The 94A has a complete harness, sans key switch, and the 94 has none.
So here's my thought: Since I have the connector kit from vintage connections, I would like to use the 94A harness as a template to reconstruct a new harness for the 94, leaving out the wires for the signal lights. As near as I can tell, I can, but is anybody able to confirm?
Thanks in advance,
Roger

Re: Model 94 vs 94A interchange
Roger,
I only have experience with the model 94, but I see no reason why you could not use the 94A harness as a template (as you said omitting the wiring and connections for the turn signals). I would however, recommend replacing the current limiter with a voltage regulator on the 94A and also adding a voltage regulator on the 94. This is a must to save those 6v headlamps. You can use the Road Toad wiring diagram for cross reference for the voltage regulator installation. You can find the various wiring diagrams on the Strictly Hodaka website under Technical Tips.

Roger (and Dale):
Dale nailed it. Concept-for-concept, word-for-word - that's exactly what I was planning on saying.

Re: Model 94 vs 94A interchange
Im also building a 94.. Do I need a current limiter and a regulator? I have a handfull of roadtoad regulators but have no current limiters. looks like the key switch in the roadtoad harness schematic is different from the the wombat harness. not sure what wire to use to add the regulator to the electrical system.
Re: Model 94 vs 94A interchange
Use just the Road Toad regulator. It connects between the main switch green wire and ground. I replaced the green wire single plug with a dual plug near the main switch.

I also have an ace that I'm gonna put back on the road, should I put a regulator on it as well?
Re: Model 94 vs 94A interchange
I recall reading on the old forum site where the Ace did not produce the voltage to be of concern and that this was pretty much an issue with the early Wombats. The 94 has nothing and the 94A has the current limiter. The voltage regular should be added to the 94 and replace the current limiter in the 94A. I have been of the opinion that the Ace's would be okay. If anyone knows differently, please chime in...

Re: Model 94 vs 94A interchange
I'm glad this thread came back. I'm a visual learner so I made this image below. Do I have this correct on how to wire the regulator on an early Wombat (94 and 94A)?
What is different is that single female connector on the green wire from the Main Harness was replaced with a dual female connector in order to "splice" the regulator wire into the green.

As far as an Ace needing a regulator, see my previous reply to this post: http://www.hodakaforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=263dleclair wrote:I also have an ace that I'm gonna put back on the road, should I put a regulator on it as well?
Re: Model 94 vs 94A interchange
I've got the 94 wired up with the roadtoad regulator and everthing works. The light gets alittle brighter at high rpms but not like it used to. Is this normal?
Thank you Roger for the like to the ace post! Both bikes have new batteries so I should be good on it. Both the ace and the wombat are 1972's so I assume the ace 100 is similar to the 90 when it comes to electrical..

Yes, I believe that your drawing is correct. This is how my model 94's are wired.rlkarren wrote:I'm glad this thread came back. I'm a visual learner so I made this image below. Do I have this correct on how to wire the regulator on an early Wombat (94 and 94A)?
