[quote="viclioce"]OK. The damned pilot jet was clogged again! Exactly what causes the jet to clog up and stop passing fuel?

Victor, I was having the same problem and close examination revealed fibers from a red shop rag was the culprit. Even as I tried to photograph the situation to warn others, charged fibers were jumping to the jet as I moved the subjects around. Here's the shot from the Resonator short tech tip. Carb assembly with a red shop rag is a bad idea.

. . . um, I don't see an in-line fuel filter in the photos. Installing one is highly recommended. The tank has been collecting "stuff" to send to the pilot jet at random (and inopportune) times for decades. An in-line fuel filter will help.

I had a really tough time getting the fuel to flow thru the in line filter on this Toad. It seemed like there wasn't enough flow to move the fuel thru the filter & down into the carb.

I have the same in line filters on the Model 03 & the Ace, but those have more than 5" of fuel line to work with between the petcock & the carb filler tube. Any suggestions on how to set one up between the "T" joining the 2 petcock lines and the line to the carb would be appreciated. Victor

If fuel won't flow through the filter into a dry carb, first check the petcock for actual fuel flow without any hoses attached, then verify your float valve and inlet passages on the carb, as well as vent passages and overflows. Sounds like either very little fuel, or an air lock.

The filters with openings at 90 degrees to each other work nicely for some applications.

I found some 90* filters on eBay. 4 for $9.95. Placed an order and will try one when they get here! Good idea! Victor

Sorry I'm a bit late with these photos. Small and short inline filters can be found with a bit of searching.

I had one like your second photo. It's the type I talked about. Made connecting a bit of a bitch because there was too little tubing to connect in between, without making the fuel line flow in an upward direction. I think the 90* one is going to make a big difference in fuel flow. Victor

Jack. The fuel flows finexeuthout the filter. It just didn't want to flow well with the filter because it made the line buckle upwards after the filter. I think the 90* filter ends will give me what I need. And I know I need the filter! Thanks! Victor

I use the petcock on the left side only and plug the other side. Run a single gas line to the carb. Plenty of room for an inline filter.

Here's one thing you could try, Victor. In the typical orientation the brass "T" connector is positioned so that the two fuel lines enter the connector on either end of the cross bar of the "T" and the line to the carburetor connects to the upright of the "T". Try rotating the connector 90 degrees so that it is oriented like this "I--". In this configuration, the left petcock attaches to one end of the cross bar and the right petcock attaches to the upright of the "T". The other end of the cross bar connects to the carb via an in-line filter. This gives a more or less straight shot from the left petcock to the carb. Plenty of room to get that all-important in-line filter into the fuel line. Give it a go and see what you think.

I'll try that Matt, if the 90* filter doesn't flow OK. The nice thing about the 2 petcocks is you can leave one side off and use the other side as a reserve! Can make the difference between running dry or being able to go a bit further! Victor

When you say buckle do you mean a kink in the line or an upward turn? An upward loop of fuel line will not affect rate of flow. It may appear not to flow because of entrained air in the loop, but the question is not whether fuel appears to flow but whether it actaully does. The mass of a gallon of gasoline will overcome any number of upward loops in the fuel line as long as the tops of the loops are below the gas tank. It isn't necessary to remove all air from the fuel line because it is gravity fed. Do a flow test and see. Disconnect the fuel line from the carb and place it over a cup at the same height as the carb inlet. Turn on the gas. It should flow just fine as long as the line isn't kinked and the filter isn't plugged with gunk.

OK. I figured out I read the pilot jet incorrectly. It was indeed a #30 pilot & not the #50 I thought it was. So I cleaned the #30 and put it back in!

I also figured out I put the plastic floats in upside down last time and it stopped the float valve from opening!

That explains why she wouldn't start this past time & why there was no fuel in the bowl when I pulled the carb off again today! Argh!!! I need better copies of pictures in RT Owners Manual! Victor

I also have to say, that replacing the screw on the points made it much more secure and it stays tight now! No more slipping. Amazing what a single Screw can change! Victor

Need to go to the mailbox! I've been texted that my 90* fuel filters have arrived. I'll see how these work compared with the straight filters of past use. Hopefully the fuel will flow fine, AND clean! Victor

Got the pipe finished & mounted on the Green Toad yesterday. Also buttoned up some of the wiring. Hoping to have wiring finished today. And I still need a set of front turn signals if anyone has a set they can part with! Hoping to get the carb on today as well! :megreen: Victor
