Re: tourqe specs
Danny, I agree with your established procedures. Time and repetition proves our theories. I question, however, the Teflon tape on the spark plug. Assuming one uses the tape to prevent a potential leak so we can properly test other areas, still, if it needs Teflon to seal, once removed, you reintrodu...

Re: tourqe specs
A question arises from this discussion: would it not be possible to install the larger diameter cylinder studs in the earlier cases by drilling and retapping the cases to the 8mm spec? Side by side inspection of the stub boss area would be needed, but if the case molds were basically the same betwee...

Re: Ace 90 engne locked up
If it was running the last time it was parked, and now it is locked up, which I assume to mean you have tried the kick starter but the engine won't turn over, it is most likely simple corrosion that has caused it to lock. The bore is iron, and the piston aluminum. These two metals don't coexist well...

Re: Steering Stem Ball Bearings model 98
Bill, The upside down photo problem is Internet wide and stems from incompatibility between certain operating systems more than from mobile devices per se. The photos that appear upside down to you do not appear upside down to the person who posted them, nor necessarily to others who might have the ...

Re: Super Rat Model 98 Modification
It is hard to see from the photos whether or not there is plating metal in the bore, but I don't think it matters at this point. It needs to be bored so whatever might be in there will be machined away in any event. The chips and gouges I see appear to be from a piston failure. It died hard. As far ...

Re: Super Rat Model 98 Modification
Jack, Hodaka never published a shop manual for the model 98 far as I know. However, the methodology is the same as any of the newer five speeds that Hodaka made, and not all that different from every other bike Hodaka produced, with the possible exception of the 175's and 250's. So if you can find a...

Re: Super Rat Model 98 Modification
Whether a 125 cylinder will "drop in" to 100cc cases all depends on the cylinder bolt spacing and the spigot outer diameter. Whether a 125 piston will mount to a 100 rod depends on the wrist pin diameter at the very least. The compatibility of 97/98 parts differs a bit from a Webco 125 kit...

Re: Super Rat Model 98 Modification
Personally, I can't tell if the cylinder in the photo is a Super Combat cylinder or from another compatible model. I suppose you could map out the ports and compare dimensions on the port timing to confirm. The cylinder head frequently does not have a complete part number cast into it because the sa...

Re: carb reed help
For (probably) age related reasons I didn't note that the photo of the upper intake boost ports were on the OP's machine. Changes my answer slightly, but Danny already got there. You can't just take the reeds out without plugging the boost ports, which is easy to do with 24hr epoxy. But that still l...

Re: Super Rat Model 98 Modification
Jack, Danny is correct that no Hodaka was ever plated by the factory. All have iron bores. Alimiferric is just a trade name applied to the later used process of casting an iron liner into an aluminum cylinder.I would not expect a 100cc, 50mm cylinder to be susceptible of being simply bored out to ne...

Re: carb reed help
Your original question was whether you should remove the reeds, since it didn't appear at first blush that any modifications had been done to make the bike what was referred to otherwise as "reed ready." Answer, no, not necessarily. If the cylinder and piston have been modified for reeds, ...

Re: Am I reeding too much into this?
To answer the question you asked - could the idle phenomenon be attributed to the reeds - no. I don't see how the reeds, regardless of age alone, could affect the tendency to idle differently depending on what throttle position you were at when you let go of the throttle, and I assume from what you ...

Re: Fork braces
Depends on how and where you ride. I never used one, and never had problems with the Ace forks. I don't like that the brace hugs the tire, which is why most of us opted for a high fender, preferably a Preston Petty. The low fender on the Ace and 100B tended to pack with mud. A brace can as well. Perh...

Re: Kill Switches
Matt, I agree completely that a red, momentary, left side kill switch is correct for dirt biking, be it woods, moto, or whatever. Not that I haven't dumped a bike now and again, but in all those years of falling down, never had a problem with a momentary switch, and never felt the need for something...

Paul, Perhaps if you no longer intend to stock paint (which I totally understand - paint does not last indefinitely on the shelf, and automotive grade paint isn't cheap no matter who supplies it) perhaps one day you can share with the community the paint codes or color names you have found that matc...

Re: Kill Switches
Bill, Your concern about a runaway engine can be addressed with a deadman switch and wrist band. Perhaps no one method of grounding the ignition serves all needs all the time. I was simply reflecting on past experience with various kill switches and pointing out that toggle switches are best used on...

Kill Switches
Rather than paste onto the continuing saga of Resonator Volume explanations, I wanted to comment on the initial post, which dealt with kill switches, and the link and photo of the Eastern Beaver switch. From what I read about the EB switch on their webpage, those switches are a toggle design: one di...

Re: What Paint Colors Hodaka Orange & Blue Model 98
Urethane paints in general orange peel far more than do lacquer based paints. Even new cars these days have very mildly orange peeled paint jobs, some brands more so than others, due to the use of modern low VOC urethane paints. While caused by differential surface tension and fast drying (chemicall...
