Re: Hodaka LED lighting

I am deeply involved with manufacturing new LED bulbs for my Preston Petty Headlight number plates. SNIP Paul-- Your message snuk in as I was writing the other reply. That is the sort of think I'm looking at-- I'd get one as the start or basis for my LED headlight mods. Since the Wombat has headlig...

Re: Hodaka LED lighting

With the amount of night riding I probably won't do I could get by with a nice mil-spec D-cell flashlight. But I like tinkering and a low-current draw LED system for the low-output Hodie electrics is a worthy putter. I still use conventional Halogens with the forward lighting in the BMW and I'm need...

Re: Tagging the Wombat

I'll keep looking for the DOT specs. I'm not expecting a problem-- this is after all Alabama, and I've heard reports of headaches getting older non-Titled tagged. And DOT/Federal requirements can or do trump State requirements in many cases. Here, turn signals light are not required by code since ha...

Ah, I'd not found any docs with a 1972 date. Til now. And I'll keep digging. :D

Hodaka LED lighting

The simple alternator of this bike puts out pretty horrid electricity-- a ragged waveform of pulsating DC or AC which varies with engine RPM. Even using the 6v battery to buffer the output is not ideal. But that is what we have to work with, all 45 watts max. Does anyone know of a turnkey (ie, bolt-...

Re: ACE Light Issues

Good post, Roger. Unless you know that the wiring is good, it is a good idea to trace and verify the wiring and the connections. These bikes are 40-50 years old and not only is there wear and tear on the wires and connections there are also undocumented mods by a PO. I have a '72 that had a great re...

Tagging the Wombat

I've gotten a 1972 Wombat on the way. Intentions are to tag it and have the required insurance it so that it's street legal and I can putter around town and to the next village, in addition to riding the stuffin's out if it on the dirt and in the mud. :D On Monday I'll trailer it around to the Insur...

Re: The Road Toad Starts Today!

And the grandson this bike is going to was here all afternoon saying "Can I do that... Can I paint this? What can I do next?" It was a joy having him with me. He has already done more enthusiastic work on his bike than the other two gave together! This one is going to be the one who learn...

I joined the Vintage MX forum for general info and "community involvement" but decided to use one of the UShip vendors to tote the bike here.

Re: Yet another Jetting question

Timely thread. I just bought a refurbished Wombat with new, new, new everything and it has the potential for being a tabula rasa on jetting, etc. A whole 'nuther Universe to putter with.

Re: Hodaka Fever

I think I'll keep the discussions about the new bike in my initial Hodaka Fever thread. Oils. Yep, we'll lapse into an Oil Thread. I'll stick with whatever the uses, at least during break-in. He uses a Blendzall variety in the premix and I'll have to ask about the transmission. I recall that he has ...

Re: drive sprocket

Dale-- missed seeing your reply yesterday. As I understand it, the bike has new sprockets and chain, of the period-correct #423 size-- it was built as an accurate restoration with attention to detail. I plan on driving the heck out of it, as the phrase goes. When the chain/sprockets on it wear out, ...

Bike Transport Needed

I've purchased a Hodaka in Rocky Mount, MO and need transport to Jasper, AL. I looking at U-Ship and other options, but thought I'd toss the request out onto The Forum.

Re: drive sprocket

Good opinion, Max. Similar to my "picked up along the way over the years" thoughts. I'll just wear out the new chains that come with the bike and then consider options in a few years.

Re: drive sprocket

Drive chains befuddle me. I've ridden a BMW for 45 years. I am in the process of buying a 1972 Type 94 Wombat 125, and it has a "rare" #423 chain and sprockets, all new. Uses a 6-bolt cush hub. I'm buying the bike to ride, but the packrat in me says to squirrel away all those "period ...

Re: Hodaka Fever

Listening to people in this thread and talking with my "local Hodaka person" I'm changing directions slightly. Looking for a 45 year old Ace 100, used but not abused and runnable for 6 months is probably going to be hard to find. And as Maxie suggests, the nicer and cleaner it is the more ...

Re: 12v Headlight

Good ideas here. I'm looking at fitting LED headlights one of the bikes, and even getting the LEDs to work with the older 6v system. Should be able to get good output per watt.

And also make sure that the float is adjusted perfectly and gives the correct fuel level. I don't know if there is a separate spec for the level of the fuel in the float bowl but of the float is "waterlogged" with gasoline and gives a higher fuel level even with a higher float adjustment i...

For sure-- any old bike that has been cleaned up and "looks good" may be suspect because seals and rubber bits can deteriorate just sitting there. Many seals can be replaced easily, but some less-easily. Ya pays yer money, ya takes yer chances...
