Has anyone ever tried case hardening the ball receiver? Just a thought.

Re: Crank sizes

Vic, Pull the rubber seal on the left side case to get it out of the way. Although the surfaces that need lube are also very tight tolerance and not really likely to allow penetration, I would at least try soaking the bearing boss area and the inner race to crank area with something like differentia...

Re: Transmission oil

Here are a few, all good: image.jpeg All are approved for use in air cooled engines with wet clutch. All are within a similar range of viscosity. The Bel-Ray is 75W, the Silkolene is rated 85W-90, the MTL is 75W (these three labeled as "transmission" or "gear" oil), and the Lucas...

Re: Crank sizes

Nice work Danny. I am assuming here that if Vic can get his crank out, you could cut the threaded shaft and graft a new shaft as you demonstrated.

Vic, find someone with an arbor press. It will take more time to set up the supports under the case half than it will to press out the assembly.

Re: Super Rat (98) piston

I think everyone is getting ahead of the discussion here. Linc says this: I think the piston is in very good shape and the cylinder seems to be fine but I think it needs to be honed. Thanks, Linc Why get into cylinder refurbishment methodology when for all we know, it is good as it is. All due respe...

Re: Crank sizes

Okay, since you have destroyed the crank half, I agree it isn't useable. Never, as in, never hammer a threaded end of anything. Always put a nut on the threads, or two nuts if you have them and they will fit, use a brass hammer or rubber mallet, and when necessary, heat the bearing boss. This is no ...

Re: Hodaka 250sleep skid plate

That's the second request for a 250 SL skid plate. I don't you think will find one, maybe on eBay. But, the 250 skid plate is a dead simple piece of bent sheet metal. I would just make one rather than search for one, in less you are building a museum piece. Get some 1/8" sheet aluminum, bend it...

Re: 250SL (white tank) parts needed

If all else fails, FMF makes universal spark arrestors, and I don't personally think the Bad Rock trails require a skid plate. Do you have the inner tail pipe, or is it missing as well?

Re: The Road Toad Starts Today!

I had to reread much of the comments above but I think I got it now. Vic was installing the left bearing with the case half sitting flat on a bench, but without direct support of the bearing boss against which he was driving the bearing. I can see a hammer strike breaking the case in this way if the...

Third notch standard. Doesn't mean it is right, it was just where it needed to be in the mid seventies.

Re: Crank sizes

I would agree with Dale going in. Get it apart first. You might be surprised at how little actual damage there is, but if you don't look, you won't know. The bearings are probably junk, but if the race seating area is clean, and it could be, there isn't much else right there to be damaged by surface...

Re: 100ll AV gas???

I can't think of a single reason to use low lead AV gas in a motorcycle. If you absolutely have to use high octane fuel, there are suppliers who sell race gas as such, and that way you know what you get. I don't use race gas because it is expensive, and mine runs fine on pump gas. Whether ethanol ac...

Re: Super Rat (98) piston

You say you think the cylinder needs to be honed. Why? Do you see something that stands out, or are you assuming it needs it but are not sure? If the piston is in good shape, and if skirt clearance is still within spec, the only reason to hone at this point would be to facilitate breakin of new ring...

Re: Hole in piston

As with any new air cooled two stroke. Warm it up to full temp but without winding it up. Let it cool to outside temp. Repeat, each time going a little longer. I wouldn't ride it until it has one or two heat/cool cycles. Then work up to full throttle gradually over the course of several short rides,...

Re: Hodaka 100-125 engine life

The grease is a good idea to trap dust that comes in contact with the hard parts before the carb. It doesn't catch much compared to total air flow, but some is better than none. Of course, if this bike is going to be ridden on the street, the grease is probably overkill. I use spray on filter oil, a...

Re: Hole in piston

What is the stinger "Stinger" is a term referring to the tailpipe of a tuned two stroke exhaust system. It is commonly the smallish diameter, straight pipe between the belly or final cone of the pipe and the silencer. Sometimes, the silencer is technically part of the stinger, so simple c...

Re: Hole in piston

Once rebuilt, do a compression test. If you have never done one, ask when the time is right. It takes more than just a compression gauge. Also do a leak down test. This will help establish if there is a seal leak, a cylinder head leak, a base gasket leak, an intake manifold leak, or a whatever leak....
