Vintage bikes at the Corduroy Enduro

If anyone here likes to race enduros: http://corduroyenduro.ca/blog/ This year will be the 65th running of the Corduroy. I am seriously considering entering on my Super Toad in the V100 class (rider and bike combined must be over 100 years old). FYI, the Corduroy Enduro was won by a Hodaka in 1972. ...

Re: Ace 100 Clutch Cage question

I am in the process on installing an Ace clutch cage in my modified Toad, and I am finding that I need a lot of spacers under the clutch disk (the little thingy that sits on top of the clutch) to take up the free play. Conversely, you may have problems with too little play installing the Toad cage i...

Re: tired tires

Duro has their HF313 in a 3.50 x 18 and 2.75 x 19. I just bought an HF311 in a 3.25 x 17 for my Dirt Squirt. They are a vintage style tire.

Re: Forks: Stick a fork in them?

If you do decide to rechrome the forks, check out shops that specialize in repairing hydraulic cylinders. I know of a local (sort of) shop that will rechrome fork tubes for $100 (CDN) ea. Not cheap, but cheaper that replacements.

Re: Punishment for Hodaka Thieves

These thieves remind me of raccoons. On our property anything left outside overnight is gone or messed with by morning. Trapping and punishing raccoons has no effect. After they got into a wild Wood Duck nest, my wife had a list much like the one above on how to punish, even do away with these guys...

Re: R/H oil seal

The crankcase pressure is constantly changing from high pressure when the piston is descending to to low pressure when it is rising. This is why the seals are double lip type.

Re: Seat pans

Dale, you are right about the model 94, 95, and 96 having different foam than the model 97, 98, and 99. The later models have a flatter, slightly thicker foam and of course the seat cover is different as well.

Re: New Member Wombat Project

Good eye Victor, that does look like a "D" in the frame number. It doesn't look like there is too much of the Combat Wombat left though. The rims look like chrome plated Wombat items and the front brake backing plate has holes for the brake light switch. Too bad the bike is not closer to O...

Re: New Member Wombat Project

A couple more observations: The front forks are non-stock and they don't appear to be late model Hodaka forks either. It would be interesting to know what they are from and what size the tubes are. The rubber foot pegs are non-stock and are from an Ace or Super Rat. You Wombat should have steel clea...

Re: New Member Wombat Project

Welcome to the Hodaka community! Your bike looks like a model 94 125 Wombat. What is the frame number? The Combat Wombat will start with a D. Judging by the stator and longish cylinder studs I would say the engine in the frame is a cast iron cylinder 100, either Ace or Dirt Squirt. The spare engines...

Re: case repair?

I have had several cases repaired using a piece of 1/2" aluminum bar stock. Cut a piece to the size you need, drill and tap one end and secure it to the shifter cover. Using the shifter cover to hold the piece of bar stock in place, tack weld the bar stock to the case. Remove the shifter cover,...

Re: B+ exciter coil problem?

Hi Ken; I would be hesitant to rely on a digital meter to record the maximum output voltage. These meters sample the voltage periodically and record the result. Since the coil output is AC, the voltage the meter reads would depend on when it sampled the voltage, and how often it samples (sample rate...

Re: Crank bearings

I always heat the cases in the oven to remove the bearings. 250 degrees and a gentle tap is usually enough.

As for installation, heating the cases and freezing the new bearings will allow the bearing to pretty much fall into place.

Re: 1974 Super Combat Swing Arm Bolt

There were two version of the swing arm bolt. I am assuming yours is the later version in which case the left side resides in a clamping arrangement that is part of the frame. The clamp has an allen key bolt that needs to be snugged up to prevent the swing arm bolt from turning. It's similar to the ...

Re: I want to know a bout home zinc plating

I do a lot of zinc plating with a Caswell kit. It works really well once you get the hang of it. Unfortunately, "getting the hang of it" takes a fair bit of experimenting. The best advice I can give is to adjust the plating current until the part give off some bubbles. In addition it needs...

There has been a lot of speculation about the purpose of the blind hole, but so far no one seems to have come up with an explanation. Regardless, it should not leak. If it does leak the case are not sealed properly, either due to damage or not enough sealant. If it is a very minor leak I am in agree...
