Re: Combat Wombat Rear Suspension Travel

An old timers trick is to add a link to the chain and run the wheel adjusters as far back as possible. This adds and inch to the wheelbase on a CW. We put rubber hoses over the adjuster bolts sticking out so we wouldnt get torn open in a mash up. Dont know if it ever helped me win a moto, but a lot ...

Re: Clutch disc???

If you are building from parts, trial and error are normal. Yes there are 2 different clutch discs. If you put them side by side the difference is easy to spot. One is a little convex and smooth on the outfacing surface and the other is recessed a little. The cage thickness, the number of steel plat...

Re: Replacing seals ins the are inside the fork.be rusted athe 250 sl fork

The threads should not be rusted as they are inside the fork but who knows on something this old. . Pull the spring and collapse the fork. See if the damper rod turns with the bolt. If it doesnt the rod is broken or the treads were stripped when it was assembled. Seen both. I have drilled the head o...

Re: Replacing seals in the 250 sl fork

Get a buddy to compress it as far as you can upside down with the spring in, Use an air or electric powered gun to get the instant snap needed to break it loose. ratchet will just turn the damper rod in cicles. there are some gadgets you can fabricate to hold the damper rod, but the gun has always w...

Re: Carbs...carbs....carbs...

Just a quick reminder for anyone doing carb swaps. One thing that can sometimes be overlooked when doing carb or slide swapping is to make sure the throttle cable is adjusted correctly. Their are dozens of different styles of mikuni carbs in the same millimeter ratings and many parts may be swapped ...

Re: Joining the club!

Your best bet for a color sample will be inside the air cleaner cover or in the tunnel of the gas tank. The green fades at different rates based on exposure. I start with a Mopar color from the the 1969 or 70 muscle car era called Sassy Grass Green. You can tint from there if you are trying to match...

Re: Can anyone identify this model? Year?

This is fun, like a Hodaka version of Wheres Waldo. Joes correct, now appears to be an Frankenstein ACE. In the first post I thought I saw a 4 stud intake with the Rat pipe and got excited. The extra wires poking out of the mag cover indicates an ignition switch at some point in its early life. I be...

Re: Can anyone identify this model? Year?

The info is there you just have to find it. Google search "Hodaka Model Identification" and it will link you to 2 sites which have pictures of where the model and engine numbers are located. The red frame with the 98cc engine and a 4 stud intake still point to a 70 or 71 Super Rat. Find an...

Re: Can anyone identify this model? Year?

The engine size in cc is stamped on the lower left bottom edge of the jug. Eds post has a typo. The engine identification number is on the case top just above the clutch cable attachment on the right side of the engine. M for Super Rat, H is Wombat, J is CW. Some clues point to a collection of parts...

Re: Can anyone identify this model? Year?

You may have hit the Hodaka jackpot. It appears to be a 1970 or 71 Super Rat. Should be a B head tag or a serial number starting with b stamped into the frame near the left side seat area. The engine is a model 93 SR, but the parts interchanges between years is wide. Would have had stainless fenders...

Re: Trials; 90 vs 100

I believe you could find better results and get the greatest impact exploring venturi dividers. They impact throttle response in the 1/4 to 1/2 throttle positions. They straighten and smooth out airflow at low rpms and increase torque. I use 2 vanes in my 125 Hodaka racer. Much easier than major cyl...

Re: Starting the Wombat Combat!

After viewing your pictures, which everyone loves seeing, I see you are also using a stock Wombat air box and snorkel. Great for that classic look, but a bigger carb also pulls bigger air, Trying to tune an engine that is straining for air is difficult. I would suggest some 1 inch holes in the outer...

Re: Starting the Wombat Combat!

Your choice of an 03 exhaust will most likely see your jetting end up somewhere nearer the stock 03 jetting versus the 95/97, Starting with the correct needle jet and needle are critical. A lot of guys try tuning with the main and pilot only because it easier. The needle jet and needle really run th...

Re: 01 DS

One of our group races a 98SR with a 98 head on a 01 jug including the 2 ring 01 piston. He reports little difference in performance. Why? Because the 98 already has the cdi unit, which lets the little 100cc engine spin up quicker. He also has the bigger clutch for the fanning a 100cc bike needs on ...

Re: Reason for speedometer bulbs burning out?

The 94 did not come with a voltage regulator. Later models did. When the amperage increases with engine rpms, it burns out the bulbs filament. The small bulbs go first, then the headlight and taillight eventually burn out. You can see this happening if you watch the headlight get brighter as the eng...

Re: jetting spec recomendation

The 28 mm will work fine and supply enough fuel once you get it jetted, since the 03 came stock with a 26mm carb, Do some research and check what jetting the 28 mm on the 95 CW uses. One area many people neglect to consider is the needle jet. A 250 main jet may be fine with a certain needle jet but ...

Re: jetting spec recomendation

The 03 cylinder is pretty much a 97 Super Combat jug with a lower exhaust port. With a down pipe similar to the 97SC, I would start closer to a 125s fuel needs than a 100. We have raced for years with 03 reed valve cylinders on 125 Combat Wombats using the stock jetting in the 32 mm carbs right off ...

Re: Hodaka 250 front hub/axle pacer and ed as sembly

The 250ED came standard with an odd selection of enduro parts. The speedometer drive was stock and also acted as a spacer to complete the seal of the front wheel bearing. It had a tail light, shock covers, but no headlight or speedometer. I used one for vintage enduro racing and adapted a Preston Pe...

Please use caution when doing sustained wide open throttle runs while chasing jetting problems. An engine seizure and rear wheel lockup at speed on a 50 year old Ace 100 will take years off your life. Been there, done that.

Appears to be a model 95 CW piston. 56.25 is 10 over and 56.5 would be 20. Your caliper may be off or try measuring at the bottom of the skirt,

Model 97 and 98s came with the the more desirable 18 21 combo with aluminum rims. Not a tough swap but you lose the improved conical brake hub of the 01. A coffin tank 02 roller would supply all the parts you need for a quick and easy update. Quite a few around as they are not as popular to restore ...

Re: 18" rear rim on 01 DS

18 inch rims came stock on the later 02 Road Toads which is basically the same bike. Any Hodaka 18 inch rim will work but you must retain your 01 sprocket carrier and spacers The sprocket offset on Wombats and Rats is slightly different from the oil injected engine models.
