Re: Close ration gear set p/n 201402

Max, Are you sure your gears are close ratio? The tooth count as shown on the counter shaft is: 24/26/27/30/34. Seems like a wide ratio spread. The main shaft gears I am not sure. Are the stickies the tooth count for the three gears starting with the machined spur? If so I get 21/20/18/15/11 as the ...

Re: Reed Valve Super Rat

Not really sure which parts you have in hand here. If the question is whether a reed induction engine can be run piston port, I would think the answer is a qualified yes. The parts mix has to be right though. If you have a piston that is from a reed bike or was converted by Dremel to reed configurat...

Re: Close ration gear set p/n 201402

From your description of your build, it should be like riding an MX bike on the street. Could be fun but would depend on final gearing. Are you looking for around town zip or do you ride back roads and such? Just curious. I would expect with close ratio you would have to avoid gearing too low or too...

Re: Dirt Squirt 80 Resto Project

Kent, as soon as I saw your post I remembered we have (Sasquatch Cycle) a Can-Am Qualifier with a Jake's Cycle dealer sticker on it. According to the sticker, they sold Hodaka, Can-Am, CZ, Jawa, and I think one other brand that escapes me. Anyway, every brand they sold went bust. It seems kind of f...

Re: Day One - New Project

I will post a close up today. Curiously, my extended swingarm, compared to a model 98 arm, is longer. Even though the later models like the 97/98 had longer wheelbases than the 92, the extra length was in the frame and/or perhaps the rake angle, not the swingarm. I can give you dimensions when I pos...

Re: Day One - New Project

Max, unless you are trying for a stone stock build, just extend the swingarm with 1/4" Z plates. Two inches should do it. Improves handling, increases wheel travel, costs zilch. Everything else remains as it was except the brake brace rod which needs extension also. Very simple stuff. Check the...

Re: Problem disassembling 938750 fork

Regarding the lip, my recollection is that there is no lip or step in the exact area where the seal will reside when fully seated. If you cooked out the old seals and those bits and pieces did not include a metal ring about a quarter inch wide and as big around as the inside of the fork nut, the met...

Re: Problem disassembling 938750 fork

Original seals were steel bodied. New manufacture isn't. The old style is available (or at least can be made) but only if you find a source through seal distributors. The new ones seem to work once properly installed, just make sure there is no oil between seal body and steel fork seat or they will ...

Re: hodaka ace 100 build (new to building hodakas)

Engine numbers and frame numbers were not the same number. "P" engine numbers were used from the Ace 90 through the 80 Dirt Squirt. No "P" engines were used in Super Rats as built by the factory. The numeric sequence of the frame will tell you when the frame was made. Hopefully. ...

Re: Help to ID a Bike Model

Max, I have to agree with your summary. Personally, I don't quite understand the issue presented about a missing data plate unless someone is looking for a museum piece, and even then, I would look for provenance, not a data plate. If I found a complete example that once belonged to John Wayne, and ...

Re: Cluttch issues

I have to admit I would not have thought of using a bathroom scale. Give them a try then. It will probably make clutch lever action stiff, but should also increase clamp force. As long as they fit in the pockets without binding under pressure.

Re: Problem disassembling 938750 fork

You have to love a basket case. By the time you complete the assembly, you will know your machine.

Do you have a shop manual of any kind? You will need torque specs, and there are a few caveats you will need to know, but othwise not a difficult engine to work on.

Re: Help to ID a Bike Model

My 92B has a four bolt non-cushioned hub. I was leery of using it behind the 97 engine when I swapped motors this spring, since the hub is 45 years old, but it worked fine for Hodaka Days. I will swap the 97 engine out to a 98 frame and cushioned hub soon, and put the milder motor back on the origin...

Re: Help to ID a Bike Model

But the Strictly Hodaka website chart is not the only chart available. As I mentioned, there is also one on the Hodaka Parts website, which correctly shows the frame number in question as a Super Rat of the correct vintage:

Re: Help..hodaka wombat wont start after rebuild

Oh Wow. No wonder you have low compression. How to proceed depends on your pocket book. If it had a 20 over in it and the bore is clean and still close to spec as 20 over, a new 20 over piston and ring would work, just clean the bore with 220 W/D or similar, and start over. But you still have to che...

So many modern damper fluids out there that I wouldn't worry about really old stock. Forty years ago we used what we had, from fork oil to ATF to motor oil. These days you can find high zoot damper fluid in any weight that works for you. I rebuilt a year ago, same forks as you have, and it was recom...

1963corvette: I don't follow your reasoning that if the data plate is missing ( but the stamped frame number is not tampered with) that somehow this would not pass your sniff test. Re: Help to ID a Bike Model

You are correct that your frame number, disregarding the letter for the moment, falls within the sequence for a 1970 model 92. I believe this is the third anomaly found in the chart within the past few months. Frankly, the chart is simply wrong with regard to 92B's and 93's made around 1970. There u...
