Re: Why oh why...
Just out of curiosity, are you folding a couple of the edges of the lock washer up around the nut? Most do. If you aren’t, then the lock washer isn’t working. You’re pics don’t show the sprocket mounted, so I had to ask… :ugeek: Victor Hi Victor, I have been remembering to fold the lock washer tabs...

Re: Why oh why...
Okay, I referred back to a topic in Hodaka Chat that I started the last time this happened in September 2016: "Shear Agony..." Consensus then, as now, is that the failure stems from a loosening countershaft nut and the vibrations that result. It's beyond my abilities, and the projection of...

Re: Why oh why...
Thanks for your thoughts and ideas. In my "quest for truth" as to why the splines are shearing I can clarify that the sprocket nut was just loose enough to weep some oil and the sprocket did not have any significant sideways play. However, it comes to mind that Honda's countershaft sprocke...

Another issue for the Hodaka Think Tank: Some years ago I totally rebuilt the bottom end of a waterlogged 250SL with only 830 miles. That involved bearings and seal, so essentially I considered the engine as having basically zero miles. Later, at around 4500 miles the countershaft completely sheared...

Re: Glazed clutch discs?
Two items for you: 1. "Gronk" sound (I describe it as "grawnch" - but I digress) - prime indicator that your clutch pinion bushing is excessively worn. 2. When you have the following symptom as you slowly release the clutch lever - nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing, AWAY WE GO!...

Glazed clutch discs?
Hi all, The 94 Wombat's clutch engagement is not very progressive and often engages suddenly with a "gronk" noise. I've been using Castrol Axle Limited-Slip 80w90 GL5 gear oil "For Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles, Scooters, and ATVs" in this bike. My 250SL gets Royal Purple Synchromax....

Terry Larson at Hodaka-Parts offers a repop of identical shocks. The price has come down too! The shocks for the Aces, except the 90, are $149.00. Here’s a link! :ugeek: Victor http://hodaka-parts.com/item.asp?PID=1786 Those look like NOS Red Wing shocks from the '70s. If so, they look like stock H...

Strongly recommend the SR241s for appearance (trials universal) and function. I have then on my Wombat and will likely put them on a 250sl after the Kenda K270s are done.

NGK BR8HS vs B8HS
B8HS plugs are not available at my usual parts store anymore. Instead they only now carry BR8HS-10 which is a marine resistor plug. The "marine" aspect refers to extra corrosion proofing I believe. Does the spark plug resistor mitigate the spark from output from our old points and magneto ...

Re: Alternatives for 250 ED and SL heads
Regarding your question about adapting heads from other bikes. I recall that a long-distance 250SL rider (Mike Perret) modified a Suzuki 250 head (TM? TS?). It didn't sound like a piece-of-cake kind of project though.

Re: Alternatives for 250 ED and SL heads
The 250SL head has an offset combustion chamber toward the intake side of the piston. The SL model was released a year after the ED and Hodaka rethought a couple of issues from the ED to the SL. Gear spacing was another one, I think. Anyway, since the exhaust side of the piston runs hottest then off...

Re: Alternatives for 250 ED and SL heads
I can't find a picture of an ED head, but I think only the 250SL has the "cutaway head feature". Strictly Hodaka was supplying oversized head gaskets, which theoretically function as an additional cooling fin between the cylinder and head. I'm using one of these gaskets on a 250SL; regardl...

Be careful with matches around the tank though. I think the process releases hydrogen gas!

Re: Shocks recommendations
250SL shocks are 14.5 inches measured eye to eye. I asked a fellow club member that I knew had a 250SL... From memory I'm quite sure the stock shocks are 15.0" -- and too short at that for adequate ground clearance. My original shocks were seized solid at 13.5" so I asked Paul Stannard fo...

Re: Looking for Model 94/A crank case
Hodaka-Parts has new 03 cases for sale.
Are they backwards compatible with 94 internals? I think there's a mod required (oil passage drilling) to run the 03 on premix however.

Re: Hodaka 250 rear brake shoes
Thanks guys, just for background when I ordered new brake shoes for a 94 Wombat restoration (rear 130mm/front 110mm)they fit and worked as they should. However, the 250SL (130mm drums, conical front and full-width rear)was a later restoration by several years. I've bought brake shoes 2X for the 250S...

Hodaka 250 rear brake shoes
Does anybody have a part number for rear brakes for a 250SL/ED? The drum is 130mm. Typical and smaller Hodaka drums are 110mm. For the front brake (250s again) I read somewhere on this forum that EBC 602 is the correct fitment. However, my latest search isn't retrieving that info today. I have bough...

Re: Zerk fittings
I have never understood the issue with greasing the steering head. With the triple tree stem in place there just is not that much volume to fill with grease. The top bearings do get greased in the process. Am I missing something? Some of the older BMWs (and other makes I presume) also have grease f...

Re: Zerk fittings
DITTO the pointed/needle tip, often used on chainsaw bars. You can buy them separately to screw onto a standard grease gun.
Just insert the needle straight against the spring loaded ball valve in the zerk and Bob's Your Uncle. If you deviate a few degrees with the needle then it doesn't work.

Re: 1971 hodaka wombat 125
In addition to the Road Toad type kick lever the front wheel (or tire) looks out of proportion to me. Is it a 19" wheel with a 3.25 tire? [Nah, I checked and compared with mine so it's probably an illusion from lens perspective. It does look kind of fat though compared to the stock NITTO, mayb...
