Re: Model 98 Project Update

Mike, I kind of like it this way too. Its separated from the house and has a/c in the summer and heat in the winter. Keeps me out of my wife's hair. You know, we were talking about the RR the other day, CSX just had a doozy of a derailment recently, not far from where I live. They had to evacuate th...

Re: Model 98 Project Update

006.JPG Well, I finally got the model 98 down off the lift to put the pipe on and get started on the Ace 100. Put the seat and tank on temporarily just to see how she looked. Painted the tank Kubota orange to match my tractor and zero-turn. Still have a few things left to do, like wiring up the kil...

Re: More Clutch Questions

Mike, I was an engineer for CSX for 30 yrs. Been retired for almost 10 yrs now and loving every minute of it. It was a good job, but I was glad to get away from it, especially since their new CEO is making big changes now and running it into the ground.

Re: More Clutch Questions

Mike, I'm glad you started this topic about clutch questions because I would have been asking the same type of questions if not for following this conversation on here. Just got around to hooking the clutch cable up on my 98 project and found there was no free play at all in the side-case lever. The...

Re: Non-detergent oil in transmission/clutch ????

I learned to drive in my dad's '49 Willys. It had a rag top and was a cold ride in the winter. That was 57 yrs ago. My how time flies.

New Fork Seal Installation

For those of you who haven't done this in a while or are new to doing it, here are a couple tips that make the job easier. Take and cut a short length of film camera negative. (just enough to go around the tube). Coat both sides with a little fork oil and the inside of the new seal. Make a cone with...

Re: The 2 the Max Project

OK, more seemingly small details, (actually the fun part of the project). The little Ace 100 forks are shaping up with paint and polish along with safety items. In my early days of racing an Ace 90 the axle pinch bolt backed out releasing the front axle to also back out at the worst possible moment...

Locknut, the big nut on the left goes through the brake arm and the bolt with star washer goes through the top smaller hole from inside the frame into the nut.

Re: The 2 the Max Project

I used a 24mm socket to get the seals out of the 98. They also had the metal outer band and were a bear to remove.

Re: Kansas Summer

I drove across country back in the '70s. Seemed like it took me forever to get out of Kansas. It was midsummer, hot as hell, and KS was as flat as a pancake. (no a/c in my '71 Datsun pick-up).

Re: The 2 the Max Project

Good to know about the impact drivers. Didn't know if one of them was worthwhile getting or not. Now I know. I've been using the Craftsman hand-held, hit-with-hammer type for years. I've worried a lot of stubborn bolts out with that thing, and even broken some of the bits. (Sears won't replace them ...

Re: Model 98 Project Fork Rebuild

001.JPG Well, as per Socal's suggestion, I went and read the article about chrome forks. Good article, but I'm still somewhat confused. After comparing the inner fork tubes that came off of the model 98, one of them is not meant for this bike. It is about 1/8" longer in overall length, and the...

Thanks for that info, but it does me no good if I can't find out where to look for Resonator volumes/issues.

Model 98 Project Fork Rebuild

I finally sprung for the fork rebuild kit I needed for my project 98 super rat. It included dust covers, fork seals and two O-rings. The first pic shows the disassembled forks, one off the model 97 parts bike (top) and the lower, model 98. The allen bolt in the bottom of the 98 fork was a real bugge...

Re: Rebuild on 98 SuperRat

001.JPG Shaun, the rotor takes a special tool which is kind of pricey, but you can borrow a puller from Auto Zone that will do the trick. I'm currently working on a model 98 too, but mine has a super combat cylinder and head, plus larger carb. The colors of the 98 is a navy blue, a bit darker than ...

Thanks for posting the pic, Max. Nice job!! Being fairly new to the forum, and Hodakas in general, I hadn't seen any of your build on this bike, but will be sure to go back and follow it through. Look forward to watching your new project too. Cheers

Re: The 2 the Max Project

Max, looks like you're having fun with your new project. I do like the looks of that white one sitting in the background. Are the forks on your project bike salvageable? My super combat parts bike forks look similar or even worse. If you have a way of saving them, please let me know. Thanks JackM

Scott, It's a hydraulic lift from Harbor Freight. A gift from my wife a few years back. Works pretty well. Gets it up where an old man like me can see things better. lol

Re: Model 98 Project Update

Linc, yes, I don't know the official Hodaka name for the colors but the frame and air box on the model 98 super rat is navy blue and the 97 super combat is royal blue. The wheel hubs and motor are black on the 98 and silver on the 97. Both have the same orange gas tanks and orange plastic fenders. J...
