Re: Project SL 175 Motocrosser

One of the best looking Hodakas I've ever seen is the 175 racer built up by Ron Liddle. I'm not sure who helped with the cosmetics.

Re: Frozen Motor

There is a better way. After all the chemicals and tapping, plus the cylinder heating then dry ice on the piston, you can try this. Block the engine under the front mount (a hardwood block works well) so that the exposed piston top is horizontal. Use a steel shaft about 1.5" to 1.75" diame...

ACE 90 engine

I recently picked up an ACE 90 engine. There are no 'Hodaka' markings on the R or L cases, only smooth area. When did the 90's start having 'Hodaka' on the sides? The serial # is P14573. Can we tell year of production or just general time of manufacture.

Harbor Fr(e)ight has a wrench specifically for removing studs. Pretty cheap and useful for other things.

Black paint vs unpainted not measured here. No likely significant difference.

Re: Frozen Motor

Seems like anything that reacts to iron/steel would be tough on the cylinder.

Re: Frozen Motor

I've tried and used all of the methods mentioned. If the piston is not at BDC, you can, as a last resort, use this tactic. Block up the front of the engine under the front mount with engine out of frame. Place a large steel 1 1/2"+ shaft about 3-4' long on top of the piston. Instead of a hammer...

I hope you find a suitable fix for your problem. Meanwhile, I wonder how many Hodaka miles have been ridden with only 2 screws holding the side cover on.

Maybe sitting on a Hodaka and alternately squeezing the clutch and brake levers will help.

Re: 5th gear issue

Ed, my emergency, one time, removal of the inner cover did not alter the shifting for that race. The 1mm- thickness of the cover apparently wasn't too much. A smaller rear sprocket would have been preferred. Bruce

Re: 5th gear issue

I once rode a flat track race without the plate in place as conditions required using a 17 tooth sprocket and clearance was the issue. Shifting was not a problem.

Another thing that might be considered is shimming up the pivot post on the 'other end' of the brake shoes. It also may even out the brake wear somewhat.

socal, that sounds a lot like the old procedure following a submarine adventure in that river crossing. Plug out, foam air filter out and squeezed, bike upside down on bars and seat, 4th gear or so, spin engine to pump out H2O, new plug, filter in, turn over and go. Once had to do this numerous time...
