While I haven't used that technique (3V battery source attached to CDI) for testing . . . I have extreme doubts that it will be useful. A great method for point type ignitions . . . but probably useless on CDI.

Yes, there is indeed an explanation for what you found. Take a peek at the outside of each of the shifter cases. You will find that one of them has "HODAKA" molded into the outer surface, while the other one will have "ACE 100" or "ACE 90" molded into the outer surface....

I'm not an optomitrist, nor a psychologist - but I am an optimist (ar least generally). So I'd say that would mean your friend is totally color-blind, annnnnnnddddd . . . your friend NEEDS another motorcycle!
