Re: Combat Wombat Mystery
Here is a simple diagram on how to file the slide to increase the cut-away. This is from a Hodaka "Hot Tip". The cut-away, on Mikuni carbs is determined by the millimeters it extends up from the bottom of the slide, ie. a 2.0 slide would be 2 mm's.

Re: Experimenting with new Wombat Pipe
Very hard to say on the jetting as it looks like your Wombat is far from stock. It appears to have an aluminum barrel (model 95, 97 or 03) and probably a different carb to match. As Dale mentioned, go up on jetting to a rich setting and then start going down a size at a time (and only one change at ...

Re: Timing Light or Buzz Box?
To use the scale type of indicator that you have, you put in into the spark plug hole. Turn the engine through and watch the indicator. When it gets to TDC, it should stop moving up and begin to move down. Once you rock the engine back and forth a couple of times to verify TDC, roll one of the o-rin...

Plus I have two more questions using the Super Rat Wiring Schematic (98):
1. Is W/BU to Gnd the Primary? YES
2. Is the spark plug wire to Gnd the Secondary? YES

Re: New Member - 1974 Super Rat (98) Ran for 30 min and then NO SPARK . . .
You might check to see if there are any test procedures listed for the 1977-1978 Honda CR 125, (check on a Honda site, etc) as it's ignition was very similar to the Hodaka's (I know some people have used both components and the whole ignition from the Honda on their Hodaka's).
Just a thought.

Re: Hodaka 250 Clutch (fiber) plate thickness
I don't know if this is correct, but I seem to remember someone saying that clutch plates from a Suzuki 250 (unknown which year or model) would work in the Hodaka clutch. If so, see what they recommend for use limits.

Re: Oversize petcock?
There are a few different size petcocks made (from other brands and aftermarket, etc.). The earlier Hodaka tanks had a 1/8" - 28 BSPP (British Standard Pipe Parallel) thread. A common aftermarket petcock size is 1/8" standard pipe thread (which is close to the size of the Hodaka threads-bu...

You don't need to change wire colors as long as you remember what each one does/is for. It just helps if someone else is working on the bike.

Re: Message For Ed Chesnut…
Here is a photo Ed put into his article on Mikuni carburetors in the Resonator Revisited magazine (Issues V:1-3 and V:1-9).
It makes it easy to tell the two apart by looking down the throat. The “A” carb does not have the brass
shroud sticking up into the carb throat.
Hope this helps.

Re: combat wombat barn find
Usually there are two wires coming from the stator, one is a ground wire (usually blue) that is attached to the stator frame (ground) and attaches to the ground of the ignition coil under the tank. The second wire (usually black)is the power wire. It comes from the exciter coil and goes to the point...

Re: combat wombat barn find
On the photo of the ignition side of your engine, I only see one blue wire coming out of the ignition assembly. There should be a blue wire (ground) and a black wire (power wire from points). Maybe just not visible in the photo.

Re: Hodaka Q&A
The model 97 and 98 (Super Combat , late Super Rat) also used the 942008 shift ratchet. Starting with the 99 Road Toad, through the 03 Wombat, the ratchet was changed slightly; a ball bearing was inserted into it to contact the neutral light switch, which was now required on all road going motorcycl...

Re: Color
All this talk about the "RED" or "ORANGE RED" color on the early Hodaka's. I can remember looking at a group of Hodakas back in the 1970's (different models and different years). While all the frames were very similar in color, there were variations among them (some might have fa...

One of the lights should be the "Turn Indicator Light", to let you know a turn signal is on. The other two are as you mention, the Neutral Light and the High Beam Light. As far as turning them off, I don't quite understand what you are attempting to do? Are these lights always om, with the...

Just wondering why this problem never came up on the model 94 and 94A Wombat's, as they used the same basic ignition system (just with the addition of lighting coils).

When checking for continuity make sure the ground wire on the coil being tested is detached from ground (including the coil frame). An example is on the Wombat it should show around 2.0 - 2.5 ohms.

I don't know if you have one, or have access to one, but the official Hodaka Workshop Manual for the Ace 90 has complete instructions for disassembly and reassembly. Re: Replace Ace 90 forks
It is a very easy update, but you have to get the entire fork, triple clamps assembly. The triple clamps from the later bikes (up to the model 02 Road Toad) will bolt right on and they will accept the 30mm forks like on the Ace 100 B+ up through the 02 Road Toad. I'm not sure if the Ace 90 wheel/hub...
