Re: Relieving the exhaust port bridge - a 41 year old mystery SOLVED?
Since I don't communicate with Kels, I will tell everyone else that this loss of a piston was caused by too much relief and not enough ramp. To think this was caused by lack of chamfer (is how it's spelled) is silly. It's very obvious in Jake's photos that the top ramp was getting contact and the l...

Re: Relieving the exhaust port bridge - a 41 year old mystery SOLVED?
I am going to have to respectfully disagree with some of this.. The pic shows a relieved bridge , which is great.. Relieving it too much is not a good thing but there is no way to tell from the pics posted if the bridge is "over-relieved" or not.. What I have noticed with every Hodaka cyl...

Re: Relieving the exhaust port bridge - a 41 year old mystery SOLVED?
piston melt.jpg . . . looks more like "media" blasted to me, where the media was chunks of piston edge and broken ring . . . Ed Ed.. I could be but I don't think so.. The ring will not stay in the cylinder long enough to do that kind of damage..It would be nice to see a pic of the head da...

Re: Wombat Dyno
Piston can rid itself of heat fast and more efficient.. This allows the cylinder to run cooler, the piston to run cooler which will make the piston last longer and the engine will produce more power.. Running 70's technology in a 70's engine is fine.. but running a more modern designed piston will a...

Re: Wombat Dyno
As stated earlier, you are NOT offering any encouragement, just condescending remarks which is the "norm" for you and this forum. For your information ,the GOAL of this engine is to WIDEN the effective power band.. Yes, create MUCH more LOW END POWER and give little to no top end power cha...

Re: Wombat Dyno
Shorty... With all due respect.. We do not need/require your advice (as poor as it is), I do this for a living and have a VERY good handle on how to mod/design an engine and the order of operations... This is NOT an experiment... It is a methodical "Process" that is common place in the 2 s...

I am hoping with some pipe modifications that we can get the curve to look more like this one (Green)
But for the 1st attempt "build it" from scratch.. Tim at TTR did an excellent job..

Re: cylinder wear
I think people may be forgetting that the piston is NOT a perfect cylinder. It is cam ground and is tapered from the top to the bottom.. So depending where you take your measurement with respect to the piston position will dictate your clearance.. MOST pistons are round at least to the skirt cutaway...

Max... You believe that you can not apply new technology to an old design... This is where we differ and a main reason why we keep having this sort of dialogue. The advancement in OIL alone is staggering..(remember this is an oil thread) and this BETTER and MORE ADVANCED OIL will help bring MORE con...

Re: oil migration
To hear how 95% of all burn downs are due to lean jetting.. REALLY!! (where are the facts to support this statistic?) Ed, it appears he did. I guess I didn't read the S.A.E. paper. Actually it's 90% which he somehow always gets wrong. (I think your opinion was "most") It was my research b...

Re: oil migration
Kels has pissed off more than one member of this forum. He makes these grandiose statements with no facts to back them up - except for his own website. Larry s. 1st of all.. You will NOT find anywhere where I resorted to any name calling or offensive postings.. That was left to the others. Really??...

Re: oil migration
You're right Shorty.. The modified Hodaka engine requires the SAME components as the stock Hodaka engine.. :o Even though the modified Hodaka engine is putting out much more power than the stock Hodaka engine, the efficiency remains the same! :o   The Hodaka engine of the 70's and the Ho...

Re: oil migration
Shorty... There is much more in play here than typical heat soak. The resultant failure can be related to the heat soaking but the actual dynamics of what occurs with a restricted pipe is much more complicated. To touch, LIGHTLY, on it.. 1) Pipe PRESSURE increases... This effects the ability of the ...

Re: oil migration
When you increase the internal cylinder pressure of ANY engine (no matter the decade made) you must account for this in the exhaust system or you could have issues. DGARDNER's engine is currently at near double stock HP output. There NEEDS to be alterations to accommodate this added HP otherwise it ...

Re: oil migration
Did a little more testing on the bike today. Temps are a little higher today and seemed like jetting was a little rich on top again. Dropped main down from a 280 to 270 and felt a little better.....but not quite right. Time to investigate the exhaust. Removed the spark arrestor, test drove and big ...

Re: Seized new Combat piston
I take your point Kels - there are a LOT of modern developments which I don't know anything about. So my comment about the "writing was on the wall" was a bit grandiose. On the other hand, Darrell's engine is made up of components which were designed and produced in the 1970's . . . and e...

Re: Seized new Combat piston
http://www.2strokeheads.com/tech2.htm I am sorry but the cranking compression does NOT tell you what octane your engine requires.. The article above hopefully can shed some light on this.. I have had engines that crank 140PSI that require 110 octane fuel and CURRENTLY have engines that crank 190 an...

Re: oil migration
After looking at your slotted piston with the giant holes (all good) it occurred to me that this engine might benefit from a notch in the skirt. This allows for earlier and more intake through the piston. You might get slightly more intake along with more mix traveling through the piston to cool th...
